I have recently obtained a new set of FJ40 axles. My old ones I think were a 69 and my new ones are a 74. When I went to pick the axles up, the PO said he removed the lockers. My plan was to swap the axles from my rig with the new axles. I then would rebuild the knuckles. Later I plan to do a front disc brake conversion.
I removed the old axles, then removed all the pieces from it. I rebuilt the knuckles on my new axle then reassembled everything from it. This is where my problem lies.
When I stipped my old axle, I pulled three pieces off before I got to the hub.
The above picture shows these three pieces. It is the piece on the right that sat between the hub and the locker body that was not present on my new axle. This piece on my old axle made the lockers extend from my axle quite a bit.
My new axle did not have this piece. It is either because the axles are different or the PO removed it. Like I said earlier, he only removed the lockers. This is what it looked like when I got it.
When I reassembled the new axles with the lockers and without this extra piece, the locker fit fine and seem to engage. However, when I add this piece, it seems as if there are no ways for the axle tip to connect to the locker.
Did the axles change from year to year? Are the outer axle shafts of different lengths on the early years?
