FJ40 front axle help

I have recently obtained a new set of FJ40 axles. My old ones I think were a 69 and my new ones are a 74. When I went to pick the axles up, the PO said he removed the lockers. My plan was to swap the axles from my rig with the new axles. I then would rebuild the knuckles. Later I plan to do a front disc brake conversion.

I removed the old axles, then removed all the pieces from it. I rebuilt the knuckles on my new axle then reassembled everything from it. This is where my problem lies.

When I stipped my old axle, I pulled three pieces off before I got to the hub.

The above picture shows these three pieces. It is the piece on the right that sat between the hub and the locker body that was not present on my new axle. This piece on my old axle made the lockers extend from my axle quite a bit.

My new axle did not have this piece. It is either because the axles are different or the PO removed it. Like I said earlier, he only removed the lockers. This is what it looked like when I got it.

When I reassembled the new axles with the lockers and without this extra piece, the locker fit fine and seem to engage. However, when I add this piece, it seems as if there are no ways for the axle tip to connect to the locker.

Did the axles change from year to year? Are the outer axle shafts of different lengths on the early years?

ok, we have a bit of confusion here. i'm gathering that when you say lockers, you are actually talking about the hubs. when you say axle, are you talking about the complete axle assy? just axle shafts? if complete axle assy, then the hubs from your old axle should fit. on the course birfs, the only difference that i know of was ball and claw vs. birf, but i'm pretty sure they were the same size from the hub housing out, as i've used hubs from birfs on ball and claw axles with no issues. you say a part is missing, but you say you used your old stuff...maybe that's where i'm confused are you sure your hub engaged before all of this? measure the distance from hub body to tip of outer shaft on both.

Thanks for the reply. After reading my post, I realized I probably made it a little more confusing than it should be.

When I said axle swap, I replaced my old axle (from the leafsprings down) that seemed complete, with another axle from a running FJ40. The new axle had the outer shafts sticking out of the hub body. My vehicle was trashed and not running so I don't know if the hubs engaged on the old axle. The new axle was from a running FJ40 that the PO did an axle swap on. He said he was keeping the lockers and ends of the axles looked exactly like this when he gave it to me.

The tip of the outer shaft sticks 2 inches beyond the hub body. My old axle now looks identical to this.

My plan was to break down the old axle to the point were it matched the new axle, rebuild the knuckles on the new axle, then swap the parts on the new axle.
These were the three pieces I removed from each end of the old axle.

When I attempted to put those three pieces on the new axle, the piece in the right of the picture, which is almost 2 inches thick, seemed not to belong. This piece is heavy and contains bearings. I don't know what it is called.

When I put this piece over the outer shaft and connect it to the hub body, the outer shaft protudes out about 1/4 inch. Not even enough to put the C-clip on.

Also, when I attached the remaining two pieces from the picture (Locker?), it seemed that there would be no way for it to engage the tip of the outer shaft.

When I reassemble it without this piece using the two pieces of the this picture,

the C-clip fits fine and the hub engages. In this configuration, when I spin the drive shaft both wheels turn. If these are all I need to finish the assembly, then that would be good for me.

Thread an 8mmx1.25 bolt into the end of the axle shaft and pull outward on it. Then you can install your snap ring.

According to your pic, the one indicated by the arraw is a warn lock-o-matic for a drum brake type axle.
You don't show the proper cover for it.
So I think you have mixed parts there .
Look at the pic for what it looks like.

Thanks. After looking at the last post, I went and looked at a few FJ40s. You were right that I have mixed parts. I put the AVMs on and they seem to work fine.

I do have covers for the warn lock-o-matics, I don't need them , you or anyone else can have them ( complete and free)..
