If your VIN plates in Oz are any thing like we have here in the US it may be the earlier black plate. Those were reproduced here in the US. May be a few of them still floating around. Same for the dash plates. There are two of those. One with the shift pattern for the transmission and transfer case. The other one was for tire pressures. Those too were reproduced. Might try contacting Foxfab here on Mud. He still may have some left.

Thanks - all good. The VIN plate on mine could do with the work - I think I have read that the 25 were imported without any body. The VIN on mine doesn't have the frame number or the enginer number. Does this mean no engine on the import and then fitted in Australia?

The two dash plates are still there and I can faintly see that they are as described. I'll look into getting them through Mud.

Cheers Dobster

Hi Dobster , Good to see a nother one in oz in good hands. Mine is no 101 on the list. My id tags are not stamped either. The brake master cyldner on yours is off a later fj 40. It should be the same as the cluch. The pice on top of the guards i think it is an add on, mine hasn't got them. Does yours have copper brake tubes on it? Cheers Ian.

Hey guys, my post must have been lost in the time warp last week. :)

Ian's right on the master, it should match the clutch. Yep, the solid brake lines were all copper. The angle on the aprons is odd, I've never seen one rust there before.

Since you asked:

Yep, the bumper and alternator are not original.

Underhood:
Brake Master and add-on booster.
Oil Cap
Battery was relocated from underseat. (unless that was done when the bodies were made).
Fuel filter should be a glass one bolted to fender before the fuel pump.

Dash:
There should be nothing in the raised area of the dash other than the operating tags (painted over) and maybe the winker switch (turn signals - semaphore flags - we didn't get them).
On the bottom should be lights (original but crusty), choke and throttle. The lever switch may be the orginal turn signal switch.
The cigarette lighter and gauge don't belong.

Looking good!

Excellent work. I'll get my forty out of the paint shop and the 25 in there ASAP and really get into the nitty gritty. Had a look at it (40) this morning and saw lots of things that look far more original - including the type of fuel filter and master cylinders described above. I'll get a thread going on that resto soon hopefully.

I'll look into the semaphore flags as there are holes in the side of the body I presemed to have been for mirros or a CB aerial. You can be assured the guage and cigarette lighter will be going.

The Dash and engine.

Hi Fellers i will ad a picky of my dash and engine. Does yours havr that stay from the fire wall to the chassis? Cheers.

I'll have to hve anopther look. On the photos I have the brake booster is hiding it if it is there. I'll let you know.

Your Winker switch - looks to be in a different position to mine - but my dash appears to have a filled hole in that position.

Is that a fuel filter in you glove box?

 Oh yeah, you'll fit in just fine here.

I think the center of the dash is the correct winker location. I've never seen that stay before. It would almost have to go through the inner fender well in that spot.

I have a long way to go in regards to knowledge of all these things - - but I do aprereciate the acceptance.

The diagram is excellent - do you have a similar one for FJ40 1965. I have the reapair manual but no dash layout in there.

Okay we know we didn't get the #6 winker switch or the winkers in the US. But we didn't get the #7 wiper valve switch but we did get the vacuum wipers:confused: At least I don't think we got the wiper valve switch. I don't remember a hole in the dash in that location. So how did the wipers work? The switch on the wipers themself?

That's correct John, the US models (that I've seen) did not have the vacuum switch on the dash, only the wipers. I've had the hose survive and it runs from the engine compartment right up the windshield frame.

A good digram of the dash, and yes that is a fuel filter in the glove box. The stay i think is a nother Aussie mod. It does not hit the skirt. I wil include the RH side picky. Ian

I have the stay on the right, and thought that must have been added later as the raditor on mine is currently held in place by the hoses. It will be coming out soon.

My horns are on the other side up against the fire wall - which is the correct position.

The horns are on the right side like this set. The braket behind the horns is the fuel filter. Whers does the bonnet stay sit. Does aneybody have a picture of the bracket?

If your talking about keeping the bonnet (hood) open here in the US their is a hole on the top of the bib just to the right of center. Passenger's side for you guys down under
