I heard that the FJC has a roof attachment that allows for one to mount bikes onto the roof rack. I've also heard that if I do manage to get this attachment (which I'm unable to find) that the OEM version isn't as good as a third party device, is this true?

I'm also wondering, how difficult is it to mount a bike onto the roof? I'm like 6'2 but it would appear that it'd still be difficult to put a bike on the roof, at the same time I really don't want to mount it by the tail hitch or put it in the trunk for convienence reasons. (I especially hate bike mount trail hitches)

OEM bike rack

When I got my FJC last spring, the local Toyota dealer had the bike rack option on their accessory panel. I'm pretty sure it was built by Yakima. It looked sturdy enough, but I built a receiver hitch toy hauler rack that sits up level with the rear bumper and works great for my bikes, camping gear and what ever else I want to haul around without hooking up my trailer or cramming inside the vehicle.:D

I called my local stealership for the part numbers, looked them up but now I'm seeing more part numbers than I was told were available initially, called back about them and then the guy acknowledge they existed but wouldn't tell me anything about them.

So now I'm wondering, do I need this: Roof Rack - Adapter Kit - 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser and then the Bike Rack, Roof Mounted - 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser/ Bike Rack, Roof Mounted - 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser or not. I was asking the guy how come he didn't provide the part number for the adapter kit and said (probably was assuming) that what ever part numbers he provided for the racks is all I need... He seemed very rushed and irritated so I feel like I'm missing something here..

Any help?

I would recommend not getting the roof mounted bike rack and get a rack that either attached to the spare tire carrier on the back (if you bought that option) or a rack that inserts into the towing hitch. Both Yakima and Thule carry these models. I have the Yakima model which inserts into the tow hitch and will swing away with the bikes loaded so I can open the rear door without having to disassemble the bike rack to gain access. Also, you won't forget about your bikes being on top as you enter you garage or other low ceiling space and hear a sickening crunch. I also think with the height of the fj (especially a lifted one) that you may have trouble getting the bikes secured without the use of a step-stool or ladder.

I just used a standard fork mount, a couple Yakima clips... done this on several SUVs... works like a champ.

There is a lot of stress on the crossbars using a fork mount. I went with a rocky mounts setup because there is fairly large plate that supports the fork mount. To me it seems to better disburse the stress. but hey thats just me. I haven't had any problems as of yet.

I saw one website that was selling the toyota bike mount for like $151 I think. I was shocked when I saw it cause it was like $270 last year.

If I were to mount the bike on the roof, what kinds of things could I do so that it wouldn't affect mileage too much? Is there a way to mount the bike on the roof with out it being vertical?

And in reference to the question that started this thread, I just realized that I was retarded in thinking that I would open the side door to mount the bike and would instead open the rear door (trunk), lift the bike then mount it on the roof since there is a place for me to easily put my feet opposed to being awkwardly placed on the driver's or passenger's side.. But still would like to know if I could mount the bike like horizontally instead of vertically.

Manhatten I like the Horizontal MightyMount and the Locking Blockhead to mount the front fork. What solution did you use for the rear tire? I was looking at the Yakima Boa kit but it requires a crossbar and such, so I thought maybe your solution would work better, trying to figure out the rear tire solution. I was looking at the parts list from the Boa and I think I can get the parts like the Rear Wheel Tray ($12) and the Wheel Straps ($11/pr) and the Yakima Wheel Tray Mounting Bolt $1 but the Horizontal Mightmount doesn't look like it would work on the round stock fj cruiser rack bar. Any ideas?

Horizontal MightMount MSRP: $32.00 USD | Product # 8003514 ($29)
Locking Blockhead MSRP: $45.00 USD | Product # 8001118 ($40)
Rear Wheel Tray 8820126 $12
Wheel Straps 8820130 $10
Yakima Wheel Tray Mounting Bolt 8880012-1 $1
Snar/Mount for rear tire tray??? 1.75" Round Tube

Also how did you get your factory crossbar to mount so far forward? Only one side seems adjustable using torx screws, the other side is fixed with 2 screws, did you remove the 2 screws and using only 1 screw on each side?

Yes, those are the right clamps...

I haven't seen Manhattan on the FJC board in a while. He has a 100 series now. But he is still active in other areas of this site. Just PM him.

This thread is 6 years old!

Gotta love bringing them back...

Kuat makes racks that'll fit the hitch receiver. I have the Sherpa which required me to get a hitch extension in order to open the rear door when the rack is tilted away from the vehicle for access. I think that the Yakima and Thule are cheaper but don't know if you can tilt them down or not.
