Phil,

I forgot you asked about the tranny diagram. Take a look at this: '58 Parts Book Let me know the parts and I'll get the real numbers from the fiche.

If you've got a parts guy with a sense of humor the whole transmission is 33100-69020, tranny w/transfer is 33100-60010. Also, you may want to talk to Marv directly about a transmission.

here's some pictures of the tranny and transfer out of the 1961 40

John-
Is this another poke at the guys who live in moist climates? I'm sure you're used to opening up transmissions and seeing fresh metal instead of...........rust. ;p

Jim I'm sorry, but this really isn't me taking a poke at you guy back east. I just don't know how else to get this pictures to Phil. I don't have his email. When I open up the bottom of the engine that was full of water I will take some pictures if that will make you feel better. This was off that cruiser from Washington state that was all rusted out. I just got lucky with the tranny and transfer.

So how was your weekend, anything break. Now you have got two 25s wheeling back there.

John

I was just surprised to see how clean that three speed was, considering what the rest of the truck look like.

The 25's came through unscathed. A little idle / driveablility issues for both of us, and Mike's clutch plate appeared to be sticking. Just added to the challenge. :D

I just thought I'd post some pictures of the inside of a four speed I have sitting in the garage to make you guys back inthe rust belt feel better. It shifts fine and goes in and out four wheel drive by hand with just the short shaft, I don't have the four wheel drive linkage. Just as soon as someone finds a service manual I'm going to tear it down and clean it up.

A little over ten years later I picked up another FJ25 transmission and transfer case. Thought the top mounting ears broke and welded back on but looking at it I think this was a poor man's adapter to another engine. Probably a GM V8. While it isn't complete I do find it strange to find two of these. Both were found loose not with the vehicle. The person I got it from said it came with a 72 FJ40 he had years before. Was told when he bought the cruiser this was out of a 74 FJ40. I guess it is a four speed.:hmm: Didn't need it but also it was too rare to be sold for scrap.:meh:

yeah, you can't drive on scarp. you can't even park on it...it's like the most worthless property out there.

Okay fixed it. Your guys sure are a rough crowd.:bang: If it was math mistake I might have been upset. At least this one doesn't appear to have been used to make chocolate shakes.

So what is everybody using to remove C clips. Easy enough removing the ones in the PTOs I'm tearing down. The one behind the bearing on the output shaft is tougher. The tool set I bought from HF are crap and looking to buy a real tool. 99% of the stuff I get from HF is fine for what I need just not in this case.

John, glad to see you keeping the faith and still hoarding parts! Orange paint makes it a keeper, save the case and scrap the gears. That is one odd bolt pattern, wonder what it was bolted to.

We were just joking. We love your posts and that you saved this transmission and transfer case.

I picked up the Knipex set. They haven't let me down yet. The cheapest I have found online was $118. Here is a link to the set on eBay for $120

Thanks, I'll have to check them out. I did notice eBay was only six pliers. Amazon had the eight piece but around $30 more. I have to shop around.

Not sure I would say hoarding. Someone post a picture of a FJ40, thought I had seen it for sale on CL. While checking FJ40s I noticed the ad for a FJ40 transmission the picture didn't look right. Ad was two months old. I thought from the pictures it was rust on the outside. This orange is original is it? Pictures from the ad.

I also had just been contacted by a member looking for 3rd gear. Told him you or Phil would be the ones with parts as I only had complete transmission. Then a day later I seen this. But since the case is the only thing worth keeping I guess I'll just use the gears a paper weights.:meh:

I am also confused why the gears need to be throw away. I don't think we should scrap any of these parts.

good catch - the ones in red are the ones in the 6 piece set

Contains: 48 11 j1, 48 11 j2, 49 11 a1, 49 11 a2, 48 21 j11, 48 21 j21, 49 21 a11, 49 21 a21

Missed this as I figured it was all in fun.

I'm hoping Jim was just kidding. I also don't scarp I meant scrap any old cruiser parts. If I were to scrap anything it be the transmission case with the odd balled ears welded on. But even that I'll hang on to. No black paint that I can see, only the red paint. Unless they stripped the paint would expect to see some black where the red chipped off. Come across two FJ25s here in AZ that didn't have their original engine and transmission. One was the 1960 that has a build thread here. It probably had a paint T/T. Got the axles off that one as it was headed further away from stock. The other I remember was a 59 but was so long ago (at least three before I joined mud) I didn't write down the VIN. Don't remember much except it was all hacked up. If the early 25s imported had red paint Jim would have a better idea. All mine are 1960 models.

I managed to get that snap rig off so no rush on getting the right tool. I rather pay the price so when I need the tool I have the right one. So I'll shop for the set with eight not six.

Oh did I say scrap? I meant scarp.:deadhorse:

No red drivetrain as far as I know, always black under the grease and iron oxide where there's no grease.;)

"Oh did I say scrap? I meant scarp." Ouch that hurts.:crybaby:

I guess this means I have a ultra super rare transmission and transfer. Those are probably the stock upper mounting ears that went to a very early Transmission. Probably even earlier then the BJ. Could be from the first proto type Toyota jeep. :hmm:Ya that's where it's from. :idea:Probably put it on eBay. As far as price sky the limit.
