I've searched the main forum and see a few ideas, but was wondering anyone in the wake county area has a hoist / holder for a hard top in their garage for an FJ40?

Toying with the idea if finally taking my top off, but need to get it lifted off and be able to store in a fairly high ceiling one car garage.

1978 FJ40 with ambi doors.

If you have something like this, can I invite myself over to take a look and see how you did it? Willing to bring a beer to drink while we chat.

I do not have one now, but I did a long time ago for my Dodge Ramcharger top.

I installed 4 heavy duty eye hooks in the ceinling joists on 4 corners of the top

Used 1/4 nylon rope, one length on each corner. Set up a double block and tackle using little pulley blocks found at the hardware store. A double on the top and a single and tie down on the bottom

the 4 were gatherd an tied together to one 3/8" rope that ran over to the wall to another set ouf double lulley blocks.

I pulled the entire top up and stored it on the ceiling and used a boat cleat mounted to a stud in the wall to tie it off.

I would venture to say that the metal Ramcharger top was much moer heavy than the fiberglass top on the 40

I use the rancor hoist in my garage. Bought it from amazon. Does a nice job and wasn't that expensive. I take my top off every summer now!

If you pass-through the Charlotte area, you are welcome to check mine out. I am using an electric hoist from Harbor Freight in conjunction with some seatbelt material to hoist mine. Hoping to take mine off here in the next few weeks.

PM my friend Steve M: oogs here on mud - he build a bad ass one with a winch from Harbor Frieght...let me see if I can dig up the pics.

Gotta say I like that rancor system snowdoggyz has...... even though clearly his top is going on backwards :D
problem is I dont even have open space on my garage ceiling :(

Another one I saw on mud was two of the ceiling hoist mtb hangars in conjunction to lift each side together. available at larger bike retailers or websites.

removed a hoist yesterday that had served that purpose. just a 1/2 ton electric hoist hung from a beam.
I believe it was two straps in the back corners and one long loop under front lip. Rice may have some more details on the setup but it wasnt a seasonal use item, though it could have been.

Quick question as I'm looking at my garage; is the electric hoist a nice to have or a requirement? I was thinking a pulley system of some sort. In all reality top would prob come on / off once per year... Twice at the most.

i think it would qualify as nice to have, bordering on overkill

the pulley system will work fine. Read through Stan's descriptions and get the pulley setup needed to make it a breeze.
