Today while leaving school, my car wouldnt shift out of second till 3100 rpms regardless of pedal pressure. it cruised at 40mph at 3000 rpms. and made a squeeling sound from the front tires/wheel wells. it stopped doing this later but id like to know what this is or means.

Did you check the transmission fluid? how many miles does your tranny have? when was the last time the fluid was changed?

Check your throttle cable and transmission linkage.

transmission fluid was changed a week ago. along with a full tune up

The shift hardness and shift timing are controlled by a cable thats attached to the throttle body. It sounds like you have something stuck either related to that cable or possibly some trash in the valve body of the tranny. Its common to hear of people having shifting problems after a tranny is serviced. The new fuid breaks up gunk and it clogs the valve body's small passages.

I had the same exact problem when I bought my rig. I had the fluid flushed, and found a small leak in the pressure line going to the trans. cooler. I cut the leaking section out and replaced it with high pressure transmission hose & clamps, then topped off the fluid. It has been fine since. When my tranny was low on fluid, and hot, it would do exactly what you described.

check it again because I would not even trust my own work without double checking it. Some mechanics are not that careful with their work.

I had the same problem with my 62 and it turned out to be the transmission kickdown cable mentioned in Waggoner5's post. It was tough to find thru Toyota, but I purchased a used one from Spector and everything shifts great now. HTH
