I have an FJ45 and the box is pooched.
So I am wondering what all of you have concocted up or had built.

There is the fold down with step that looks good & the tray back,

If you could have the best of both worlds what would it be ?

The original style is great but sometimes a tray or other would necessitate the function or task at hand.

We all like pictures so I will enclose one of the truck in question.
Please add a picture of what you've seen or done.
Please mention what would be great !
Any disscription or idea is great.

I'm thinking of a fold down on three sides with internal hook points to secure any loads.
Currently I have a swing out fj40 style tire carrier mounted to the tail gate.
The tire carrier will later get moved to a new rear bumper to swing out.

Your thoughts and pics ?

I like the trayback a lot. The sides can be removed in a couple of minutes and it's easy to strap things of all sizes down to the deck, which is 6' x 7'. It's aluminum, which makes it light in weight and not a rust concern. I've carried 2000 lbs on it.

I am thinking of customizing mine a bit. Double wall fold-down sides would be nicer. A stouter headache rack which clears the roof would be better. And I'm thinking it would be nice to have a couple of large tool boxes slung underneath at the front as well.

Great ! nice pic and idea, I am also thinking of double wall with tie down hooks installed inside with the sides to fold down flat if need be for a flat deck.
Under bed tool crib is an essential idea as is aluminum.

Cheers

Alberta Mac,

Try searching for aluminium tray bodies or ute bodies, such as the links below. That is what they are call here in Oz. Have a look through what the businesses below have and steal the ideas that you like to make your dream tray.

I have had some experience in driving vehicles fitted with aluminium trays and have found the poor quality ones start to rattle and can drive you crazy, but its all in the design of the tray and the components used, so make sure you use quality gear.

Hope this give you something to think about. :hillbilly:

Poor Wally's Land Cruiser Emporium. Made out of 1/8" steel. Loaded it up with a yard of stone dust and held up just fine.

alberta mac, post some pictures of what your bed looks like now to show us what you are dealing with.

I have a prob at the moment uploading the pic. it is a shortened box fj45 and am thinking I will put two rol bar hoops in the rear bed, fr and rr then have a front receiver hitch to attach a T bar. I'm also thinking of an upright tool crib running across the back behind the cab with lift door to access shelves for storage it may be 14'' wide. the roll bars will be 4'' to 6'' higher than the roof and will be able to carry a 4' x 8' sheet of wood or drywall if need be. This is for my fj45 king cab.
