Looking for a little help on a long distance potential purchase. I am in Chicago and considering a FJ40 near Winston Salem and hope that I can bother someone in the area to give it a once over before I make the trip down. Please drop me a PM if you can help out - and I will be glad to send a Cubs / White Sox or Bears baseball hat for the effort (or other Chicago based memorabilia).

Thanks,
Mark

There is quite a few people that live around there. Post a link to the rig that might help also :D

Here is the craig$list add for the vehicle.... Pictures that he sent me looked nice but would really like to have a someone local to give it a look.

Clubbymd - I'm certainly no expert but several things look suspect on this one to me. The bezel is from ''79 or later (rectangular shape) and the top is '77 or later (vent windows). Suggest you post a link to the photos you received (upload them to Picassa or Photobucket) and see what some others can point out for you. Suspect there is more that doesn't add up.

I've seen worse asking that kind of money, I do dig the japanese license plate, and the Air Horns are sweet too:hillbilly:

Looks like a fuel tank off'n a 79+ under there to go with the 79+ bezel.

There's a lot going on hose wise in that engine compartment, granted my '76 motor has been cleaned up smog wise.

It's got promise, not completely "stock" or model year correct, I'm sure you could talk him down a bit.

However, there is enough that doesn't add up to do a little checking.

See if he can snap a pic of, or get the frame serial number and the serial number off the motor, and see if at least the frame number and the registered VIN number jive. Frame serial is right above the PS front shackle, on the outside of the frame rail, and the motor number is on a flat spot, right in front of, and above the starter. At least then you can verify it's all from the correct year.

Something just doesn't seem right about this one to me. I guess I feel like the owner (or PO) should be up front about why it has parts from so many different model years. See if there are pics of the "restoration" and definitely follow Alex's advice.

If I were you, I'd spend a bit more and buy this one, although it is much too nice for me.

Looks like it has the carb cooling fan on it there which is a 76+ option.

A lot of empty plugs in the engine bay, which may be from all the smog crap.

All I'm saying is it has a lot of post 74 stuff on that truck, maybe the frame is a 74, and someone restored it with newer body components, engine, etc, etc, etc. Don't want to throw cold water, it may be legit, I'd make sure before you buy :meh:

I agree with David, Jon's 40 is really sweet though:cheers:

Alex/ David,

Thanks for your input, I did get several other pics and added them to the photo bucket folder. I did get the frame serial number, but the passenger floor board fix scares me a little. Given all of the challenges, including distance, I will pass on this one. It may be a good ride but I will leave it to someone else (it is now listed on this site, so maybe someone here will like what they see).

I agree with your comments about Jon's truck - if only he would let me get that for $9K!!

Again, thanks for the help and be well.

Maybe he (the current Owner) just has no clue that it is not a 74. I assume he has to have is registered to drive on the road and the registration says it's a '74 but that doesn't mean something funny hasn't been done in the past to get it registered the way it is.

Everything points to it being a '79 or later. Actually looks and seems like a decent price for that year if there weren't all of the questions about the title/registration.

You are more than welcome to purchase mine for 9k...depending on what you have to include as a trade ;).

Good luck with the search and be sure to post up any additional info you get on this truck...the mystery has me wanting to know more.

The body looks to ba e '79 or newer model. It has the square bezel, rain gutter goes all the way to the running boards, parking brake lever in the floor, etc. The engine is older though. The '79 and newer 2Fs have "2F" cast into the front of the valve cover, and I don't see it on this one. It does look like a solid Cruiser though.

That thing would be aces in Cali now that the state put the kibosh on the rolling 25yr smog exemption and set the bar at 1975:hillbilly:
