I've been having a lot of trouble with the cruise lately, i had a compression test done a few months back, and every cylinder was around 170-185 besides the 5th cylinder, which was 120. and it was putting out something like 1200 hydrocarbons. he mechanic said it'd be alright to run, but i just wouldn't get very good fuel economy. And that if i wanted to keep the car, to save up and think about rebuilding the engine.
I've been having a really bad stumbling/hesitating/cutting out problem, which was apparently caused by burnt points (was going through a set every 4-6 weeks. replaced the coil, condenser, leads, plugs, distributor cap, rotor. nothing seemed to fix it. just the other day, i couldn't start it, so i adjusted the points and it started (maybe they slipped?) the following day it started cutting out, so i replaced the points myself (first time) i cleaned the contacts and put some points grease on there. wouldn't start. Spent about an hour adjusting them with a feeler gauge and trying to start it, till eventually the muffler blew up. scared the s*** out of me. after that, it started first pop. just very loud. maybe there was a problem with the muffler? it wouldn't drive though, would just hesitate and cut out as soon as you let the clutch out. and all i could smell was fuel. also, exhaust smoke was coming out of the air cleaner.
I have it parked up at my dads house for the moment. I really want to get it back up and running as i love the car and i enjoy driving it. I'm just really not sure what to do. I just got a loan, and am looking at getting a new car. and hope to try fix the cruiser, i'd like to do most of the work myself, but i don't really have any idea or experience when it comes to cars.
I've just got no idea where to go from here, it would cost a fair bit to get it towed to a mechanic, and i'm getting pretty sick of mechanics really. so i'm just wondering if anyone could help out with a little advice on what i should look at doing, fixing, getting fixed.
The thought of letting it sit there and rust out if a little scary, and i'm hoping that doesn't happen.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Zac.
