Fixed a crankshaft position sensor leak...

I've had a crankshaft position sensor (CPS) leak ever since I bought my truck (for approximately 10K now) and have asked for a known fix on this forum, and got a few responses. All were grim, and everyone had to eventually replace the sensor. Christo Slee tried a number of sealants, but had no luck..... well, I tried Permatex's Hylomar HPF gasket and flange sealant and it has stopped the leak..... at least for the last two weeks anyway. I cleaned the sensor and housing good with brake clearer before appling a light coat of sealant. The rubber gasket (o-ring) that goes between the sensor and housing has a flang molded on the inside radius....... its not your usual o-ring....... and I was told that a 2000 Ford Explorer oil pan plug gasket is very close to the same size, shape, etc. as the OEM gasket (which you can't buy from a Toyota dealer, forcing you to replace the entire sensor (approx $75-100). I have not checked out this alternate gasket myself, but I will if the leak starts again.

Hey Wayne, that is great information......... thanks, that could save me $75-100 some day.

was the leak from a bad sensor housing or bad o-ring?

It was from the o-ring....... the PO must have thought it was leaking from the sensor, where the wiring goes into the sensor, because there was sealant on the wires and sensor at that location.
