I'm buttoning up a 1963 FJ45 SWB Fixed Cab p/u and for the last couple years have been driving it with a 54" section of foam pipe insulation in that spot between the top of the windshield frame and the bottom of the roof.

The pipe insulation blows out every once in a while and I'm just amazed at how big the gap is. Am I missing a part? I think ABecker might have asked this question before but I'll be dipped if I can find the response so my question is...

Is there some kind of trim piece that's supposed to go in that spot that I'm missing?... or maybe a really REALLY thick piece of rubber gasket? It makes no sense to me that the original designers would have made so many reasonably tight fitments and then left a big honking flue hole above the windscreen. ????

This pic help
Why not change it to one from a later 40 that will seal better that is my plan

Thanks... it definitely helps and I think I might be missing that red trim piece you have there amongst the tie rods. This would explain much!

Not sure what you mean about a later model fitting tighter. Where would a guy scrounge up a later model top for a fixed cab; or are you planning on some cutting and welding? :hhmm:

If a 1971 Fj-40 cap would work, I've got one... I could take pics/measurements if you want. Granted the FJ-40 cap rivits onto the fiberglass top, and your 45 has a metal top. Not sure if it would work without some fab work.

That red trim is off a later hardtop which fits much better avail from ccot but I salvaged off another truck years ago for this situation

Thanks for the offer, Trav. I'm off in the direction the tornado pointed me!

Xlnt idea. Thanks for the heads up. CCOT..... zzzzzzzooooOOOF!

I took my top of this summer and have it back on temporarily now. That is, with only half the bolts.

I got a wind storm blowing through that corner of the roof, along with rain, snow and what ever else is in my path.

I have been hoping that with the full complement of bolts back in the gap would be eliminated.

the later 40 is a nicer fit because it actually bolts to the windshield frame and rivits to the top, so it's a tighter seal. there is a rubber weatherstrip that goes between the tops and the frame. the earlier model just squishes against the w/s frame and can easily not seal.

Not sure I totally understand the issue but that trim piece is definitely the answer. Rivet or no rivet I can see quickly that just having one is a major step forward. I also get a lusty feeling when I see these windshields with the wipers down low and a motor / blades that actually probably work. Those old overhead jobbies are not for Alaska weather for sure.

Thanks to all for the comments and direction.

Two nut zerts in the top of the windshield frame a bit of trimming around the wipers and you should be golden. Well removing the old channel from your cap will take a while
