Hey guys,
First time poster, long time watcher on here. Thanks for all the forum watching and worldly wealth of advice that is available on this site by all involved, now I just have a few queries before I head off on my northern Western Australia adventure! Hope someone out there can help.

I have a 1997 hzj75 RV troop carrier and when turning whilst driving I have noticed a clunking sound/feeling under the driver side floor. What could this be?

Also what is the reccomended oil to use in the front diff (has an auto locker) and rear diff? Do I use the same in both?
What is the reccomended gear box oil also?
The wagon has 180k on the clock.
Cheers!

Hi & welcome! Read somewhere on mud that clunking could be the body mounts, check that out, also check your shocks bolts, shock bushes, & steering bushes

I used Castrol 80w90 on both my Axel's as well as the transfer case and I understand the insides of the 71, 76, 78, 79, 100 & 105 are the same, only from buying an ARB diff locker perspective. Hope that helps, shouldn't need to change unless you drain plug has plenty of metal bits on it and the oil is milky from mixing with water. I just did mine on 300k as a PM along with everything but brake fluid & PS fluid, which will be done at 320k

check for play/slack in the ujoints of the driveshafts and at the pinions too....Which side is the drivers side?

Hi all,

Since this Mudder says he is heading to Northern Australia on a big trip, I'll guess he lives in . . . . . Australia! which has right-hand drive motor vehicles. :D

Regarding the clunk on the right side while turning, I'd suggest having those front axle knuckles inspected, to ensure the trunion bearings are up for the big road trip.

Good luck,

Alan

the front diff (has an auto locker)

I'd put my 2 cents worth that there's a good chance your hearing the front auto locker disengage when turning :hillbilly:

Drivers side is the right hand side :D
Being a "rv" which is a Aussie spec Toyota badge I'd say he's in Australia.

I had a lower loose shock absorber nut which resulted in a clunk offroad, I have also had a clunk which was missing teeth from the diff, also had a clunk which was a blown cv joint.
Have a visual check underneath and grab things giving them a hard shake if nothing obvious then maybe start pulling bits apart.
