Hi all -- after lurking on T4R.org and IH8MUD for the past year (my cousin bought an 05 Sequoia, and that got me thirsty for a big truck), I've been on the hunt for some sort of Tacoma/4Runner/LC/LX/XTerra/Disco to have some fun with (skiing, camping) as well as be easy to wrench on, and reliable enough to get me through the next two years of graduate school (when my TDI can't cut it).

So after seeing pleny of disappointing, beat up rigs with questionable history, heavily rusted frames (I'm in the North East), I was giving up on the hope that I could find something decent on my very limited student budget (around $5k).

So I saw a very vauge post on Craiglist of a 2000 LX470. It was just one generic picture of the black SUV, listed in "good" condition with very little description, and it was just under a 2hr drive away from me. I had nothing planned this past Saturday, so I scheduled to see it the following morning at 10am. I told myself I'd give up on trying to find something decent in new england if this one didn't pan out.

Long story short -- the owner's wife was the one that posted the AD as she was a bit more tech savvy with craigslist, and so that probably explained the bare-bones description. In person, the husband greeted me and showed me around the truck. Turned out he bought the car for her brand new from the dealer about 16 years ago for $62K, per the window sticker folded in the owner's manual. He also had the classic "3 ring binder" of reciepts, all from the same Lexus dealer, spanning from it's first 1,000 miles service, up until the ignition lock repair earlier in the year at the 220K mile mark, with regular services every 5K to 10k miles inbetween.

The car is on it's 2nd timing belt. The first one was done around the 75K mile mark, and the 2nd at 165K. I should have 30K left until I need to address it. The car also had the startor replaced at the 140k mark.

So now that it's mine, the immediate needs I noticed in very brief time with the car are:

1) Tires. The current ones don't have much tread left on them, but they did wear evenly, so that's encouraging.

2) Front left turn signal housing is loose. Looks like it might have a broken tab somewhere. Haven't had time to look just yet.

3) Hood latch won't lock the hood down. It remains in that 'staged' position and stays about an inch open. Pressing it shut doesn't do anything, and it just bounces back up. I zip tied it for the drive home, just in case.

4) Rear trunk latch is broken.

5) Driver's seat is pretty beat up. I think I'll keep a look out for a replacement seat from a junkyard/craigslist/part out.

That's it, off the top of my head. I've got school tonight and all I'm thinking about it finding time to actually spend with the car to crawl in/under it and adress any other outstanding issues. I didn't really play with the suspension and any other settings, so I've got plenty to evaluate.

Looking forward to the new adventure! Open to tips, suggestions, recommendations! Only had time for one picture, attached!

Let the fun begin! I just had to repair the screw tab on the left front turn signal of my LC. I removed the philips screw and the broken tab, then pulled the entire light housing straight forward to remove it. (It stuck pretty tight, but came out after I pried with a plastic trim tool.) I repaired the tab with a combination of Krazy Glue and Gorilla 5 minute epoxy. I glued the tab back on with the Krazy Glue and then reinforced that both sides with globs of the Gorilla epoxy. It worked fine and is a permanent repair. I hope the hood latch is just an adjustment. If the rear trunk latch doesn't work, it may be the little electric motor that operates the mechanism has gone bad. A search on MUD for door latch motor will show you what do to.

Thanks for the tips, Sandroad! I've got class tonight, so I can't wait to put it in the garage tomorrow to actually take the time to inspect things!

As far as the trunk latch -- I don't think it's a motor issue. I mean the whole handle that you squeeze to open is totally disintegrated! I'll take more pics and i'm sure I'll have more questions tomorrow (after searching the forum, of course. I'm sure they've almost all been asked! )

Welcome and nice rig! I swear I saw it on instagram under the #Lx470 tag and thought it looked nice.

Always great to get a rig from an old man with a Binder full or receipts!

Did some poking around last night.

Step one was to look at the AHC. I printed out a 'how-to' posted here outlining the steps for the AHC bleed procedure, and they stated that BEFORE even attempting it, to look at the graduations on the bottle between the LOW and HIGH settings.

I counted 9ish, so it looks like it passed that sniff test... I'll wait on the TechStream to be able to read pressures.

A rough "10pm and it's raining outside" measurement got me these values from driveway to top of the wheel arch, going across the middle of the wheel.

Low Setting:
Front Wheels - 31.25"
Rear Wheels - 32.75"

Neutral:
Front Wheels - 33.5"
Rear Wheels - 34.5"

High:
Front Wheels - 35"
Rear Wheels - 36.5"

I need tires, and the outer tie rod ends are pretty torn up, so those will need to get replaced as well. I'll check any play at 3:00 and 9:00 to see what the inner tie rod end looks like. Otherwise the balljoints are still tight and new looking.

I also fished out 2CD's that were stuck in there giving me an ERROR3 message. Each time the car starts it goes through this annoying "eject" sequence that lasts about 15 seconds.

I'll do more digging around tonight!

So, there's a slight "clunk" that happens OCCASIONALLY, when going from Park to Drive, or Reverse to Drive.
I got under the car, and the rear driveshaft has a MM or two of play that I can feel in my hand.

So attached is the point where I can feel the play.... this is a generic picture. My shaft looks totally dry.

I haven't greased anything yet, and I'm not sure when they were last greased. But I'll do that tonight and see if that helps...

Thanks!

Hey I hear a slight clunk too going from Reverse to Drive or drive to reverse. Also when I hit the pedal and accelerate when I'm a little over 1k RPMs. Interested to see if it's something that needs to be greased or if that's just the way it is supposed to sound.
