Hello! I recently purchased a BJ75 with a 3B, and I'm finding the information I've seen so far a bit difficult to wrap my head around.

The truck needs new front leafs and shocks. Are 60 series springs compatible or do I need springs specifically for the 75? I'm trying to avoid buying a full OME kit at this point, but I will if i have to. There definitely is a parts scarcity for this truck where I am.

Are there any other cruisers that share brake parts? I'm going to need front pads and rotors really quick.

Last question is, the rear locker. I was told when I bought the truck that it came with a rear locker. I wasn't able to test it, nor see a switch or lever for it. I crawled under the truck and saw steel line (Hydraulic?) coming off either a splitter or booster attached to the frame (two lines in, one to the brake and one to the piece on the axle). the piece on the axle looks similar to the diff lock actuator in the diagrams I've seen. So! That seems pretty obvious that it's the locker. I chased the two lines back up the frame and lost track of them when it got to near the transfer case by the right front wheel. After that, it's a total junk show.

Is there supposed to be a switch or lever inside the cab for the locker?

Anyone recommend some resources for me to read up how these trucks work and the features they come with? I bought the factory service manual off ebay, and it'll shop up mid month. Anything else you would recommend?

Front springs are specific to the 70 series but will work from any 7x model with front leaf springs , Cruiser Brothers and Cruiser Outfitters here in the US sell aftermarket springs. Your BJ75 might have come from the factory with a rear LSD (limited slip differential) and maybe the seller was referring to that. It is easy to check the data plate under the hood and look at the axle code and then google it ;-)

Welcome. First pictures of this said two steel lines. Sounds to me those are the parking brake lines. Year of truck would help too. If it has factory lockers they would be mechanical and there should be levers on bottom of the dash near door below the steering wheel. 60 series brakes work. There are some good vendors on here for parts too.

Thanks! I'll start with that. The truck doesn't have a proper 15 digit vin. I have 2 theories. It was subject to a shady import and wasnt past the 15 year law for Canada, or it was a mine truck and the vin didn't matter. When I typed the vin in to a few different sources it came up as invalid. I'll find the tag under the hood and hopefully it'll paint a better picture

There is also a vin number behind the passenger side wheel stamped in the frame , probably rusty and hard to read but it should be there .

Fwiw if your truck came from Europe and was made in japan your vin should start JT1VBJ75......

For those interested, here are the pictures of what I had asked about for the diff

That's the load proportioning sensing valve for the rear brakes. The steel line is the spring for the load sensing valve. They have nothing to do with a locker.

Your locker, if it has one, is probably the non selectable type that senses spin and activates. The best way to test this is in soft dirt by getting it partially bogged and see if you can make both wheels spin.
The best thing you can do regarding parts compatibility is to get access to a parts manual. With this you can cross reference parts with other models. The 84 - 90 7* series share a lot more parts with a 60 series than the 90-99 models.

Note. US toyota had a big sulk and had the online parts manuals blocked in north america so you may need a VPN to access it.

Stick with MUD and you will learn who has the parts in NA. There are still a lot of parts available at NA toyota dealers, but you need the part number to get them if they have them. What years is yours, LH/RH, 24v/12v?

You should delete that body plate pic as soon as possible

KO82 is your rear axle and if I recall correctly it should be a KO85

You could have got a choice of 3 diffs in the 7* series. Open diff K0 82, cable lockers K0 84 and LSD K0 85 (mainly ARL market)

Your truck shares a lot of parts with the ‘85-‘87 BJ70 that was sold here in Canada. This is what I use when asking for parts as no where has a listing for BJ74.

Would it be safe to assume that the brakes are a direct fitment? Leafs maybe not

I believe your BJ75 and a BJ70 are the same front axle, brakes and leafs. Both have a 3B diesel motor.

Front leafs = BJ70
Rear leafs = BJ60

The 75 has a 1ton load capacity, I doubt any 60 ever had rear springs that can hold that much ;)

60 rear leafs will fit a MWB but not a 75 series

I have a very similar truck. I had your truck 'favourited' in kijiji for a long time, but I'm in Ontario and it was in BC, so I was just keeping an eye on it. Mine is a dead ringer for your truck and it is an ex-mine truck. I've never checked the VIN online to see what it actually shows up as, but I'm sure someone got creative to get it on the road. The previous owner had it on the road though and the 'locker' he put in was a Powertrax thing (you don't select whether to lock it or not). Anyhow, I'll be watching this thread to see what you do with it. Mine needs a new cab basically, so for now it's a really good bush truck.
