My better part and I took out the old 1982 FJ45 RHD last night for its first 20 mile drive. Rebuilt engine, front end, rear end, trans, steering and so on. It was a little late in the afternoon and probably should of started in the morning just in case we had to taxi are way home, but all went as hoped and only had one problem, the fuel tank.
I stopped about five miles down the highway to do a engine check and underside check just to make sure all was going to plan. Being the fuel tank filler is on the driver side near the door I could hear a faint sound (hiss) and put my head closer to the cap to fine out that was the source of sound. I removed the cap and the escaping pressure was bad enough it blew the cap out of my hand. Now vacuum is one thing but pressure in a tank is not good.
put the cap back on, drove for 3-4 miles and tested it again and the same. Out side temp was a round 90 deg. Drove for a mile and stopped and turned off the engine, then tried to start it without letting the pressure out of the tank and it would not start. Let the pressure out and it started, not easy be started. Tried it again and the same again.
Okay with all that said, I checked the charcoal canister and it check out good, checked the piping and all is correct and good, checked the small fender mounted VSV for working condition and it works, but not sure if it works off of the small computer box on the fire wall (no info). The cap draws air in but not out. The only item that I question is the main tank check valve (photo, arrow down) located in the expansion tank. The valve makes a funny sound when air is blown into either end without any restrictions. Could this be my problem child that is pressurizing the fuel tank?
Other than that that's all the beast has for emissions.
Since it is an Australian truck and it's emissions are somewhat different from that the the US emissions. I am low on resources for their parts and settings and troubleshooting.
Any input is welcome. Oh yea tried driving around the block for about 2 minutes and did the same ???
It drives, and that's a plus.
Thank in advance
