I ask about wood cutting yesterday when I picked up my fire permit for the year.

$30 gets you tags for 2 Cords, (8 - 1/4 cord tags).
There are cutting areas in Dog Valley, Hope Valley and Monitor Mine areas.

I've never cut firewood before but I know we can spend $30 pretty fast buying those little bundles at the store.

Just wondering if anybody has cut fire wood or has any advice.

If you have the time its worth it , but its a lot of work. Between saw's and a splitter and the maint ...
it can eat some time.

But its nice to be out in the trees with a power tool :hillbilly:

All I have is a chain saw and splitting maul, hand splitting wood is tough.
When my folks lived in Silver Springs they bought rounds and I would help them split and stack it. IIRC that was one hell of a lot of work.

i went first time last year with a friend who had the tags and chain saw. we also brought a barrel and both drove full size HD trucks. one long day, we brought home about 1.5 cords apiece.

I believe it was lodgepole pine, and the dryer stuff split easily with a maul. the rest i let sit for a few months and it split easily too. not real dense wood, but definitely worth the price. i was extremely sore and tired that night.

this year i plan to buy my own chain saw, and collected twice as much wood over the course of a few outings. good times!

Don't cut trees down over the road back, and don't drop them on yellow jacket nests!

That lesson only cost 120+ stings, and a wasted week of sniveling.

Wood Cutting

Did you need help cutting wood? I have an 18' car trailer. You can load up longer rounds and haul them home then work on it as you get time. Wood cutting is hard work but better than spending the money for bundles. I have a good splitting maul also, make it easy. Need some help holler, I like splitting wood, smells good and good exercise. Ben.

I don't really have a place to store or cut longer pieces. I'll probably just use my little utility trail and try to cut and split everything before it comes home. We can make as many 1/4 cord runs as it takes to get 2 cords. I only have room for about 1/2 to 1 cord but $30 is still cheap compared to buying from a wood company or bundles.
You and your splitting maul are more than welcome to come along:grinpimp:
We'll probably wait until the weather cools down.

Take 2 saws. One big one, one smaller one.

I have a big Stihl with a 36" bar that makes quick work of anything you can haul home in a pickup. It will give you a heck of an upper body workout though.

I've spent a little time cutting wood, I can give you some quick pointers if you've never done it before.
