Got my Cruiser back on the trails. Started tearing her down last August and proud to say I took it out yesterday (Labor Day) without issue.

Hopefully I can start making some of the rides going on around here.

I've GOT to see your drivetrain.... which is what i want... just under an 80 rather than a 40...

I'll say this...a 3FE smokes with a manual behind it. I've got 4.88's and it pulls those 40's without blinking.

And the Toybox is where it's at in the rocks.

H42 right?

what's the deal on the toybox? Does Marlin make those? I was looking around the other day and did not see any on the web site. What does it take to run one, in additon to the TC you already have?

It's easiest just to call them and ask them if they have one that fits your configuration. I bought the rear adapter from a member here on Mud and bought the front kit from Marlin. I then build my own toybox. It was cheaper that way.

Do tell specifics! I'd like to hear before I order one from Marlin in a few months.

is the toybox a device that allows for a 2nd trasfer case...or is it just a "high/low" box that interfaces between the transmission and transfercase?

It is the front half of a mini-truck transfer case (just the high-low part) adapted to go between your transmission and transfer. you can buy the whole thing from them pretty much ready to go or supply your own gearbox and buy the adapters, there are always several top shift tcases listed on caos for cheap. I would be very curious to know what the adapters alone cost - that is a cool deal that you can order the core housing already machined out.

Phil, congratulations on finishing the build - I just reread everything again and it is really amazing. I can't wait to see it in action.

The guy at Marlin (when I called them back) told me the machined housing is factored into the price of the front adapter kit, which is like $550. So if you get the housing you pay $650 and you get $100 back when you send them your housing.

The reason it's more expensive than the truck doubler is because it comes with a new output shaft for the transmission, a machined reduction box housing, a two-piece front adapter, a gear/bearing combo that goes in the toybox, new shaft for the toybox, machined sleeve for the rear bearing, and the rear adapter plate. In other words, it takes a lot of custom stuff to make it work together.

At the time that I bought my front kit, they didn't have the rear kit available (the one from the reduction housing to the LC t-case). I think they were having trouble sourcing the shaft that goes in the toybox. I was fortunate to find a member here on Mud selling his rear kit so I jumped on it. My dad already had a spare mini-truck t-case laying around so I used it for my donor.

so you gain some serious gear reduction through the toybox and don't have to run super low gears at the differential...or I assume you can go crazy low...?

Correct.

My crawl ratio for 1st gear, double-low is 77:1. Plenty low for my tractor motor.

3.55(1st) X 2.28(toybox) X 1.96(LC t-case) X 4.88(R&P)

You can always put a 4.7:1 gear set in the toybox if you want to go lower.

Elbert, with your h55 you would be even lower - more like 89:1 with the h55 and 4.11's.

Phil, is the 4.7 gearset a separate option from Marlin? That would be sweet to have a low, extra low, and extra extra low.

There was a guy that had a box that would move like a foot every couple of minutes.... It was weird.

you could buy the sm465 that gulfsurfing has listed, bolt it up to a 4.7 toybox and you would have a 248:1 first gear crawl ratio in low/low - almost ten times lower than stock, I am guessing that would seem like a foot every few minutes.

Yeah you can buy the gear set from Marlin. I'm not sure if anymore work is involved in getting it to fit but I know it's an option they offer.

I really don't need it. First gear is plenty low for me. For the small waterfall I climbed on Monday I actually had to use 2nd gear to get the back tires to lift up.

Most of the guys I ride with have mini-trucks and they can crawl that spot in 1st but their back end is lighter than I am. If you watch my video (in my build thread) you'll see I worked the ledge trying to crawl it in 1st and I eventually dropped into 2nd and it hopped right up.

Awesome. I watched that video the other day and just went back and watched it again. I couldn't tell what the difference was other than more wheel speed the first time I watched it.

I have the standard split case transfer case, yota 5 speed and 4:11 gears. I'm thinking about going to 4:88 gears. Want to get setup to run 35 tires at some point.

Also I'm really considering selling the marks adapter and yota 5 speed and go with a NV4500 setup, and move my engine back from the radiator a little bit. No timeline on that. I really want to get away from the adapter business (bellhousing adapter / marks adpater). Really just want to run GM engine, and transmission. The flywheel is GM anyway. I would like to have a better clutch pedal "feel"...don't care for an inch off the floor like it is now. I know I would end up with an adapter at teh TC Case.

I doubt the toybox is for me...
