Well Lookin good so far bud keep up the good work ill be tearing my 40 apart soon enough and doing a spring over and v8 and trans with power steering in the process hehe

Seriously, you'd be amazed at what they can do for a schedule.

When you did that rear chop, was there any special trick to make sure the cut line on the inner fender matched the outer fender, or did you just eyeball it?

Nice write-up and a good start on the process.

PS is definitely one of the top three best mods ever for any LC.

SOA and Front Disk brakes are right up there.

I cut the front/ outside FIRST (obviously)...I used a laser level in addition to taking measurements and marking the line I wanted. I stepped back and looked at the laser line to see if that was truly where I wanted things and made the cut accordingly. I left the back side of the fender in tact.
Then, I took a piece of flat sheet metal, a bit longer and wider than the hole left, and leveled it up over the hole. I then scribed a line on the bottom edge of the sheet metal on inside of the rear quarter that remained.
Getting the bottom piece to cover and seal the hole is the hard part. Its a lot of cutting and grinding to get it to fit with the least amount of hole filling welds.
The easiest way to do that is to get a piece of papter that is long and wide enough to cover the hole, tape it up, then rub the edges with your dirty ass hands/ gloves to give you a nice tamplate to cut from.

I dont see much progress happening!

Theres a "PIG run" in the end of Aug., so lets get on the stick and get that BEOTCH wheelin!:D

I'm afraid the pig has gotten turned into a work bench for the house projects over the last few months, goal for this week is to get it cleaned back out to work on it. The only progress is a bunch of welding practice, and that's during lunch at work. I've been meaning to go back and look at your chop thread, how you welded it and so on.

Couple of questions for the locals:

1) Can I legally drive it on the highway without a windshield (yes I'll wear goggles)? It's going to be a while before I put a headliner in, and I don't want to trash an additional set of window rubbers.

2) When I brought it into the state, it had the CA BAR tag stating that the 71 Chevy truck engine was in fact legal in the 74 toyota. But since I non-op'd it for a few years, when I put it back on the road is NV going to insist on all of that 1974 smog shtuff?

#1. Sorry, windshield required. If it came with one, then you have to have one. PM'd you.

#2. For NV on a '74, all they care about is that it will pass the "sniffer", so I wouldn't worry. Anything '81 and after, you have to have all of the smog stuff (visual, etc.), pre that, tailpipe only.

Yeah, I probably needed it. I'll give you a call when I get to that point, probably in late august. I'm going to try to pop out the dent that is right in the middle of the cut first.


I got sidetracked onto a three weekend project that I'm now two months into. I'm building an elevated fort for the kids, last weekend I finally got to a point that I could leave it alone for a bit. I was telling them that it's a dog house more than 4 feet off the ground, and the ladder was just for them to get inside to clean it out. Last weekend when it turned out the dogs wouldn't walk up the plastic slide, the kids suggested that maybe they could use it as a fort instead of a dog house.

Lying to kids is fun. :p
