Well I finally got new tires and went with the Firestone Destination A/T's. I never bought or even looked at F-stones for my cars before.
I mounted 305/70/16's on the stock '97 rims and they really do look much more aggressive in person than they do in pics. I wanted a tire for all weather road use that would have excellent qualities in each season, also very important was performance on sand since I'm building a surf fishing rig. My other reason for buying these was the high mileage ratings they've gotten online. Also the price was very reasonable.
I snagged them from a local Firestone shop for $194 each - $779 for 4 tires. Including mount, balance and alignment all told it was $899 + $76 tax = $976 total.
So far I can say that they're very quiet and much smoother riding than the 275 Michelin cross terrains that were on the FJ80 when I bought it. I haven't put enough miles on them or driven them in enough rain yet to say how they handle the wet, and I won't be on the sand for a couple more weeks, but I'll report back as I gain more experience with these tires for those of you looking for a mostly road tire with hopefully solid off road capabilities.
They look great with the 2.5" lift too.
