filter at the gas suction tube?

Does anybody know if there is a pre-filter which the gas goes through before it makes it through the suction tube (tank exit)? I am using an old FJ60 gas tank on my diesel and I am having some fuel restriction issues. An acquaintance said they thought there was a small filter right at the suction tube (within the tank). Since gas is a lot less viscus than diesel it may create a problem.

Just wanting a second opinion before I pull the tank.

looks like there is a filter is on diesel and gas... I'm not sure if they are identical filters, it looks like they have a different part number.

When I removed my 85 FJ60's tank it didn't have one on the pickup tube in the tank. I think it may have gotten lost when the tank recall was done through previous ownership. I have the tank out now and steamed it, shook the hell out of the tank and it's not inside it. I got a new pickup and the feed line does have a filter almost like a plastic strainer basket clipped to it.

Do you think that this filter is fine enough to restrict cold diesel fuel? Or only fine enough to filter large particulate?

To be honest, I have looked at several fuel diagrams like that and this is the first one that I have seen to have a filter that obvious. I may be looking at older tanks diagrams.

Thanks for your comments guys. In the end I doubt that the filter was restricting the fuel more than all of the crap in the fuel suction line. I can't believe the shop did not clean the used tank prior to installing it. But, it is clean now and running like a champ.

Glad to hear you got it going. I also found that my suction line was full of junk but inside the tank was spotless.

My '87... clogged tank fuel line.

Blowing air down into the fuel line... plugged. Checking at hose to tank... tank plugged

Little plastic screen was pretty clean.

Finally dropped the tank. The inside of the tank didn't look bad, but the line was clogged completely. Kept pushing a wire back and forth to remove some of the crap in there. Carb cleaner to help flush it, let it soak... repeat with wire.... man when the junk blew out of there was it mess!

All I can figure out is the line was reused when the new tank was installed. Years of "drive for a month, park for six months... just varnished everything up (Cruiser normally resided in NV, only being used on heavy snow days and occasional summer trips). Amazing part about the lines being plugged up... the ol' cruiser fired up long enough to drive up on a trailer for the trip back home... and once again back in Texas. Carb was plugged up solid! Almost like she was appreciating some TLC after being 'parked and forgotten for so long'.
