Okay guys. My 40 has a tilt wheel retrofitted to it. Well it has developed a problem. The steering wheel is no longer mechanically attached to the column.

The nut in the middle of the steering wheel is all that is keeping me steerable.

If I can figure out what the steering column came out of, I will simply replace the steering wheel properly. If not, I'm going to have to scour junk yards and hope to get lucky.

Thanks in advance.

GM column (looks like it's from a pickup).. And see those bolt holes around the big nut. They should have bolts in them..

BTW, there is a steering wheel adapter under the black cup looking thingie.

Hmm....when I took the horn cover off to fix the horn there were no bolts in the holes. I'll check it out.

Okay I checked it out.....I see how it works now. I now have to figure out the correct threads for the adapter since there are not any bolts in there now.

I can't see the pics from work, but the two bolts to either side of the big nut are to install a puller. They do not have bolts in them. They might be utilized by your adapter. They are not used in the stock configuration.

Does the shaft move up and down in the column?

Does the end that connects to the box move?

If the answer to the first question is yes and the second no you might have broken the collapsable mechanism in the shaft. It collapses the shaft if your chest hits it in an accident. It's not really fixable.

If the shaft moves up and down at the steering box, then the bolt that holds the shaft to the box is missing and at some point you will lose all steering and crash.

Gumby can you look at photobucket? If so I'll send you the link to the album.

EDIT: To answer your questions. The wheel doesn't move up and down in the column. The column seems fine, it is just the wheel and the connection.

IIRC fine thread 3/8" bolts

They thread into the adapter.

IMHO, replace that hunk-O-crap steering wheel with a different one.

I am amazed that you have not lost all of your steering.

Gumby, it is a standard Grant style steering hub adapter.
