Seems like we've got plenty of chefs helping to stir the pot now. I'll just add that it's easier to stab the engine with the truck on the ground than to try to stab the transmission from a transmission jack on your back, so unless the trans has to come out I'd leave it in place. If it does have to come out assemble the whole drivetrain and stab it in as one.
I don't recall all the details about why the engine is out, but if it is, yeah, assemble everything on the ground and then stab it!

I cant agree or disagree as I haven't installed an engine separately w/o the trans in decades. I can attest to trying to stab the the trans into the motor when they are both suspended and , the conclusion is that method sucks a*& but, if you have the patience, you can make anything work. To me(pea brain) Just makes the most sense to use the @RUSH55 suggestion to mount the motor first, then use the trans Jack w/ the drive shaft disconnected to stab it. reducing one moving variable seems like the most logical approach unless of course your interior is apart then you can use more detailed engineering like what @Pighead suggested.
Hoping at some point to be posting q's of easier challenges.. my .02
This approach just sounds like two astronauts trying to couple in zero-g, nothing is attached and everything is moving around.

Man - you’re bringing back bad memories. I wrestled a transmission/tcase back in with the motor in place once this way after a clutch job. I bought a good transmission jack that’s micro-adjustable on both axis…that’s what you need. Done it 3-4 times since and easy breazy 😉
Yeah that sounds like the right tool for sure. The one I am attempting to iuse is just one plane up/down. hoping I can somehow get this thing to mate up.
The intial attempts were with a tranny jack on the transfer case and a floor jack in the front. fail. lets hope this next attempt does it.

While I am getting closer to getting the trans mounted, I did manage to successfully mount the engine first , then got close stabbing the trans in but on the advice from my consultant, I decided to back it out again to put it on gear to make the final push successful. In the process the trans came off the trans jack and the floor jack, turned over and made a temp mess in the driveway. with some effort got the trans back on just the trans jack stand for this next attempt and going to try and level it w a block so I can use the guide pins. This is significantly more difficult then I was anticipating.

Just blindly visualizing this while watching tv with one eye and reading the forum with the other

Is it possible the pilot bearing is not the right size?
