There should be clips on both sides
There are 2 clips . one is loose, I ordered a replacement.. Ive heard you can use a zip tiie then remove it through the opening where the fork exists the bellhousing. Supprised the moving T/O bearing hasnet come up as a potential issue when installing ;)

The only issue here is that he has the truck on the ground and the driveshafts are attached. This is why I didn't include rotating the OP shaft on the transfer. You need to rotate the flywheel in this case without taking further action.

To rotate the OP shaft with the truck in gear, keep the truck in 2wd and disconnect the driveshaft at the rear of the transfer. Or put the rear on axle stands and you won't need to disconnect the driveshaft.

If you're feeling adventurous, connect the starter and just give it a little bump while you push the engine back. - make sure the transfer is in neutral. I don't recommend this with the truck on the ground like yours is.
I haven't even gotten that far .I am still attempting to get the shaft through the t/o bearing w/o moving it in the process.

“Alignment bolts” are unnecessary

“the trans moves seperately from the transfer case so aligning it isnt as easy as everyone claims.”
How so? Are they not bolted together?

“Should the trans be in gear when attempting this?”
If you’re having problems with the spines engaging, it’s preferable for it to be in gear (1st) so that you can grab the output on the t-case and turn it back and forth to get the splines to engage.

Use a tape measure and measure your gap on the top and the gap on the bottom and adjust the angle the trans is sitting at to get the gaps equal.
The two obstacles you’re going to run into is getting the splines to engage and after that, getting the nose of the shaft to slide into the pilot bearing. Usually, neither of these are accomplished without vigorously rocking the works back and forth until they slide in. Sometimes vigorous profanity can help.
Let me rephrase what I said re the transfer case and trans part. Since the are weighted on different sides I jacked them up using a trans jack on the transfer case and a floor jack for the trans in order to hold/move them so they stay level. I tried moving slow and yes, used a tape measure to check that the surfaces were w/i 1/4" of each other as I pushed the motor forward, checked with fingers that the shaft was aligned to move through the T/O bearing but it moved and hence, no luck getting it through. Once I get a new clip for the bearing that should help keep it on place. I am planning on repairing the e-brake/seal so the drive shaft to the rear needs to be unhooked. If I remove it, will this make it easier to align the output shaft ? Seems simple but as I am finding details matter...
TIA for the help on this .. cluster

Sorry @Tomba ,
you are performing this job 180° backwards from how I do it. Not sure that I can say anything that will help you.
I’ve always stabbed the transmission into the engine, never the engine onto the transmission.
I would drop that transmission and t-case out of the way, get the engine mounted and bolted down and then stab the transmission into place and reassemble.
I’m sure what you’re doing is doable, but about 100 X more difficult.

That my friend, is the answer I was looking for! Makes perfect sense. Eliminate 1 of the moving variables. I'm just too far down the rabbit hole to think of that.

So, to summarize: Disconnect the drive shaft and do the ebrake project then reconnect it after 1. engine is mounted and 2, the t case /trans are bolted up. 🤔

So you're saying there's a chance...

Oh, it's an issue all right. That's just part of what makes that job so tough. I like using ratchet straps for the fine adjustments...

@Tomba i have wanted an FJ55 for the last several years. I have found a few. They were either impeccably restored and HUGE money or in need of work that I just can’t do easily anymore. No hiding that I am older and less capable than ever …. Following your trials and tribulations has easily catalyzed my belief that I am right. Glad to watch you discovering the right track……and doing so vicariously

Best of luck coming your way !!

Thanks! and I juist said to myself "this is the last time I will take on this level of any auto related projects, Period". This all wouldnt be so bad if I dont have to chase everything down to do it right. W/O the MUD team I waould be toast....

i can totally relate

Its a full on wrestling match now. Does toyota or anyone else make a tool to easily remove the shifter? needs to be removed to slide the trans back to get da motor mounted.
Check city racer, think I saw one on his site. Although I bet there is easy trick to remove without it, I just don’t know it.
