Fender idea DONE!!!

I need to get fenders on my trailer, and haven't found any i want to spend money on, or that seem reasonably priced, so here is my idea. I'm planning to bend some 3/4" conduit hoops 3 or 4 per side, then cover with either sheet metal or some type of tough plastic. I can't decide to keep the tougher look and put the metal/ plastic on the underside, or just attach over the top.

Any thoughts?

How are thinking of attaching to the tubing? - maybe pop rivet? Then you won't have any holes showing on top if you go for the rugged look.:meh:

after trying to make several bends and getting close but not exact, I decided something else was in order for fenders. After checking through many threads here and in Expo, I paid a visit to the local Military surplus store and picked up a couple metal cases for $10 a piece. These will be used as the top of the fender, then I will bring the front and back down from this.

Boxes are mounted and look good, and super sturdy, had my children stand on them as i took the lids off and put them back on.

Wife had the camera tonight or I would have pics, maybe tomorrow.

Here is a pic of the boxes mounted, hopefully some welding tonight and some more progress. You can faintly see the caulk line where the fender will run.

Why not just use some 3/4x 3/4 square tubing and cut and weld them together? You can then weld/rivet/screw on some sheet metal over the fender frames.

I picked up some aluminum diamond plate today, nice and shiny

any thoughs on corrosion between the aluminum plate and steel structure? maybe a rubber gasket between the 2, but what about bolt, zinc plated okay?

Fender DONE!

I took the day off work, and got the fender wrapped up, I am very happy with the final product.

Thanks, I'm not sure where its headed next. I'm trying to come up with some idea for bows to help hold the tarp that is normally covering the box, or replacing the sides with diamond plate, might be to shiny.

Stylish and functional - very nicely done:cheers:

I used it this weekend to pick up some firewood, and everything worked well. Ideas on tailights? I don't like the bulky square ones on it now.

I always use the rubber mounted sealed units either round or oval. you can pick them up at most any auto parts store.
your fenders look good.

I'm kinda digging the way the aluminum looks. It sure is durable..and lightweight too! Even if you don't go with the diamond plate I'd definitely consider just the plain. Strong, easy to cut and connect, lots of good finish choices. Of course, only if the B-U-D-G-E-T allows. The boxes are a plus also. Ask the Mrs. for a 1/8" x 4' x 8' sheet under the tree ;p

I found on Craigslist many listings for tailgate protectors and usually pretty cheap, an inexpensive way to pick up some diamond plate
