Hey all,

Just wanted to see if anyone had any knowledgable info on fan clutches. This weekend I had to replace my radiator due to a cracked plastic. As such, I had the fan and the clutch out. I took notice that the fan even when cold is pretty tight to the hub. I could turn it by hand and feel the tension of the viscous fluid in there, but for me to turn the fan separate from the hub, I could not of done it with just one finger, I had to grip the hub with one hand and the fan with the other to turn. It seemed pretty tight for the unit being at room temperature. I am wondering if I actually have a bad clutch and the unit is almost engaged all the time. Other fan clutches I have had the pleasure of taking out (non toyota) seemed to be much more "free" when cold. Any input is appreciated.

What clutch? An Aisin, when resting, the fluid leaks out of the reservoir into the active area, so will feel stiff. This is normal, causes the startup roar. The Eaton is a little more sophisticated, doesn't do that.
