a trek 3700 is an entry level hardtail. fairly good frame but cheaper though not s***ty wheels and components meaning they are heavy. you get a reliable bike but heavy. not great for climbing and would not hold up to harder trail riding.

depending on the year and condition and whether it had discs, $345 might have been fair. however, i would have recommended you either buy an older but better (lighter) cross country frame hardtail, or else if you just want transport around town get something like a cyclocross with no front suspension.

this is a better deal. i had a trek 930. nice bike from the 90s with a handbuilt american frame. even if you have to replace some components this is a better bike if it fits you.

bikepedia is a great resource if you are used mountain bike shopping. if you don't know the different components, retail price is a pretty good guide. the 3700 is apparently a $400 retail bike. you want a used bike that originally retailed for at least $700 and preferably over $1000 and is not thrashed. when you buy a nicer used bike you should check that the components match the original oem spec and have not been switched out.
