Hey Guys,

I am trying to rebuild my 66' engine as original as possible and currently I am trying to figure out the configuration for the heater shut off valve and / or the temp sending unit and am stumbling into some issues.

My question being, in the F135 I see that according to SOR the temp sending unit was introduced in 68'. But I have a temperature gauge in my speedo cluster, do we know where the temp sender is supposed to be? I thought it would be with the heater shutoff valve but the head only has 1 opening where as later engines had 2, one for the shut off valve and one for temp sending unit.

I guess I am looking for insight on what the standard factory setup was...

Thanks,

John

If I remember correctly you sourced another head. Could it be the head you have is from a earlier F135? The heater wasn't even offered as a option until 1964 sometime. Standard in the US starting 66. Lots of head could only have the single port. The temp senting unit has always been on the head as far as I know. Oil and charge were idiot lights in the earlier years but temperature has always been a gauge on US imported FJ40s

I did source a new head. Same year however and my old head also only had 1 port. Im thinking that the temp sending unit went in the hole and when they put the aftermarket heater in they made a "custom solution" for the heater valve but probably wasn't original.

Anyone else have input?

So you don't have a stock heater? That explains alot. Is this by chance a 65 that is titled as a 66? 65 the heater was a option. On the after market heater heater I have seen a hose off the water pump and the return hose for the heater. I've got enough of old cruisers sitting around I should be able to check. The only problem with this setup is you get cooler water because your not getting the water right off the head. Another option would be to use a tee at the head. Since the sensor doesn't flow anything you shouldn't have flow issues.
