Hey guys -
Had a problem on my 93 80 with the wiring harness near the firewall/rear heater control valve. It gets very hot there and the OEM protective wrap around the harness crumbled away when working on my truck one day. This left the wires exposed to high temps. It never left me stranded but I was told that it could be an electrical nightmare if those wires were to melt. Went ahead and wrapped it as well as I could with high heat exhaust wrap. Wasn't pretty but I believe it helped in that it never failed while I owned it.
Fast forward to my 99 100 with 182k. Installed my OPOR sliders the other day. While under the truck, noticed an exposed harness near the transfer case/exhaust components. Of course this area produces some serious heat too. Looks like it was originally wrapped in flame retardant wire conduit which has mostly crumbled away now. Went to Autozone and picked up 10' for under six bucks. Going get the exposed wires covered up as well as I can tomorrow after work. Searched but didn't see much on this. My LC is an AZ truck so zero rust but age and heat take a toll on rubber/plastic items like this. Am I being paranoid or is this good preventative maintenance?

Just a point of reference, I've been running my Scanguage with the transmission temp gauge since I have had the truck (about 2 years). It's never gotten over 155 degrees, so I wouldn't think that it's a major heat source. Plus, given how much air is flowing down there, unless the harness is super close, I wouldn't consider it a major issue. That being said, cheap preventative maintenance that makes you feel better, is probably worth doing.
