I am interested in exploring Talladega National Forest in my '40. My rig is fairly reliable, and it is certainly road worthy. I plan on going with two friends who will be taking a Jeep Wranger and Tacoma 4x4. I hear from sources that you can enter the forest near Oxford, Alabama and take forest service roads all the way to "near" Sylacauga, Alabama. Has anyone heard of this or has anyone tried/done this? If anyone has ANY feedback that can assist me, or if anyone has attempted a like-adventure near Birmingham, Alabama, please chime in!!!

Thanks All!

Charles.

Guys,

This information is awesome! Thank you so much! If anyone has more to contribute, please do so. I hope to be on the trails in the coming weeks. I will catalogue my trip as best I can for you all. I wonder......should I reinstall my aux gas tank for adventures like these?

Again, many thanks.

Charles

I wouldn't worry about fuel. Fill up before you go into the forest even in 4l and 6-8mpg... the sad truth of our part of the world is that you can't go that far away from refuel/civilization.

I don't think I have traveled more than 50+ miles off pavement at a time.

Carry water. I made that mistake once. Got to camp, realized I couldn't Cook dinner turned on the GPS "oh look, that bp is only 12 miles away, let's go get a couple gallon jugs" an hour later I was back at camp.

I'm still trying to figure out what the post about no Leo allowed is referencing.

I think you need a map...

For real stop by the ranger station..
Tell them you are here for the Rainbow Gathering they will know exactly what you are talking about.

Signs are on the south side of the road. About halfway to Sylacauga. Obviously private property. Thought they were interesting. Stated emergency medical persons were allowed but not law enforcement. You should wear your tin foil hat in this area.

You know...

If you have a big red button that you don't want someone to press, putting a sign on it that says "do not press this button!" is not the best way to achieve your objective.

You also know...

they keep the drug money

Guys,

We made it to the southern part of the forest today. We went in 600-1 and roads near there not far from Sylacauga. It was certainly slow going and wet, but really a lot of fun. I will try to post a few pictures soon. ( I must admit I am more of a live in the moment kinda person a less of a picture taker.) The mentioned threads and feedback were helpful. The best piece of advice I got however was to get a map. I took a Talledega Forest map and a few county maps I got from a cartographer in Bluff Park.

Most importantly, the 40 was dead reliable and perfectly suited for everything we encountered today. I plan on piecing the whole park together this fall and winter.

To all, thanks .

C.

Let some folks know next time you might get some trail mates

I want to explore the area more. Me and Aaron went there awhile back but where ever we went wasn't too challenging. I'm sure there are more places. I've seen some cool pictures of places.
