I think it may be cool to take a group drive through Chuck Swan State Park sometime.

For fathers day we drove out to the park again this weekend. It took about 1hr 15min to get to the entrance, but we spent about 4 or 5 hours driving some of the roads. That place is so big - we still were only 20 min from the entrance after driving trails all afternoon.

We explored a graveyard full of rev war vets and other people from the early 1800's. We drove through some super dense woods, we saw deer and turkeys, Our cruiser was swarmed by 100's of butterflies at one point. We took a road on the way out called Clear Creek - we got to drive thru the swollen creek about 3 times as the road twisted through the bottom of the gorge - and we then drove tight switchback up the other side.

We drove in the park all afternoon, and after looking at the map and I can see we maybe drove 8% of the road. There is a big loop on the far side of the park with a few loops. I bet it would take a good 40-60 minutes on the main road at 25mph (speed limit) just to get there.

You wouldn't need lockers, but if you don't have some higher ground clearances then you would tear the crap out of your ride - some of the parts are pretty bumpy with lots of larger rocks embedded in the ground, I usually couldn't go more then 5-7 mph, but I did get up to 15mph in a few parts.

Anyway if some people want to get to the park early on a Saturday we could probably get to the back and back before dark and explore some of the far off places. The map online is pretty bad - there are a lot of spurs you can drive and explore.

I was a little disappointed by my truck. My lockers would engage, but never when I wanted them too. I think I have an electrical issue - I'll have to make sure to keep working them more often. I haven't used them for like 3 months, but they used to be flawless. Hopefully if I keep throwing the switch I can get them to fire up more consistently.

Just spent 5 hours today riding around the park. Chuck Swan is beautiful - some of the roads are very rough. Actually dropped into 4 low - one of the creeks we crossed was fairly high and the rocks where really slippery. The loops to the north of the park have a lot of scenic vistas and are fairly mild. On the south side of the main road, the roads can get really rocky and unkept. Lots of fun, and except for a few spots, nothing to worry about in terms of getting stuck.

If anyone wants to go, in a few weeks I am going to go again and drive a few of the trails I have yet to get to. After that I am going to have to get a land use permit and start driving through blue ridge. Would love to ride with some of you up here.
