I thought I would start a thread specifically designed for expedition adventures. Looking for advice on equipment that is required and planning. I want to keep this thread on topic so keep crap to the others thanks.

From looking at the picks from the Rovers, I picked up a few short falls in the vehicles. The things I picked up that may have made the trip better are: Lockers, Ground Clearance aka good lift, Fuel Consumption. Things to look at on your rig are: Water Proofing, Winch, and Tire choice.

This is all in my opinion.

Agreed Jay!

Expedition Canol would be fun and a **** of an adventure. Timing is also something to take into consideration. The rover guys started in Aug ( I believe) August is a beautiful time of year in the Yukon but temps are just starting to drop below freezing near the end of the month. Cold weather has pros and cons as we all know.

One huge advantage of the Cold for the Canol is that one can drive on the frost. This makes crossing muskeg much easier. Oh yeah and by september the bugs have all givin up as well.

One thing about winches..... Trees in the Yukon arent the same as the trees here. They are much smaller and have shallow root systems due to the permafrost. If one can grab three trees in a bundle they might hold with a cruiser pulling on them. I'm familiar with the more northern parts of the Yukon so trees on the lower Canol might have some size to them.

Wonder if a "pull pal" would work?

My old man has airial photographs of certian regions and I bet could get some of the canol. If one overlaps two of the same photos and offsets them a bit, using a stereo-scope a 3d image is seen. Might be a useful tool.

Just some thoughts....
Keep 'em commin...

oh ya I am gona build a big tall mud eating cruiser.

Watch out for them Alien Probes.... Abduction on the North Canol Road

That probably falls under the crap category, but does sound like a fun trip.

I take it you've seen the thread on roverlanders about it? They actually went as far as to build a raft to float their trucks over a river.

Their website is weird and won't let me post a link, but go here Roverlanders of BC and its about halfway down in the events section in the web forum.

Well I spent some time looking through the Land Rover guys photos. They did a h*ll of a job. That looked like my kind of adventure through and through. When, and I do mean when we do this I'm in for sure. Ill sell a leg, arm, nut whatever it takes to afford this adventure.

Hey Cam, don't want to burst your bubble, but I started reading the rover site and they had some good points. I am figuring 6 weeks to 8 weeks to do it. The other is there is no way out at the norman wells end. I was also thinking we should turn island thon into something more.

Islandthon would be great if we had a few more people on the trip. I think we should start planing it next meeting.

Canol trail would be a huge under taking that why Cam has started the thread maybe we should put the bug in the expedition link on mud kinda mention the land rover guys made it 2/3 the way.

Huh?? I ment they did a h*ll of a job... as in h*ell of a GOOD job. Those lads were prepared and put in a great effort. I'm into the trip for the adventure, teamwork and to say (one day) we did it as a group and all returned in one piece.

Miss Understanding here. We've arrived at Norman Wells and discover its 4 hotels, 6 restaurants and 1 bank. Sounds like good fun, but 2 days later, its time to go home. This is what I read on there site so far, also on guy was saying that they are trying to block it off to vehicles, to my understanding. I am all for this but it wont be till later in life for me till I am able to take that kind of time off, so in the mean time I was thinking we, as a group could turn island thon into more of a mock trip to prepare us for some big adventure.

Some scenarios...

Plan A is to go back the way we came, but... we came through several fierce rivers that just about wiped us out, so we're not too excited about doing that again!

Plan B is to take another road route or trail south. Is there such a thing? Guess we gotta start looking at possibilities.

Plan C we use the marine highway down, by barge from river and lake to lake, until we hit highway again.

Plan D, we try and find a compound to safely stow the trucks for a few months, fly home, and fly back in January and Drive the official ICE ROAD down.

I got it now... sorry Jay.

Personally I'm not too intersted in Norman Wells. Camp Canol is where I want to get to. I suppose hot showers on the other side of the Makenzie would be nice but a canoe, skiff or raft for humans only would do. I don't need the 60 there and if she were to go down in the drink..... oh man I don't even want to think of the fallout from that one. I suppose I just assumed we would all turn around and head home the way we came.

Other ideas, thoughts??

Ive been saying it for years and not showing up, but I think the Islandthon thing would be cool if it was a few days long trip, with destination up island somewhere.

I've been wanting to do something like that for a while, and this summer, I WILL have my ugly camping wagon done. :hillbilly: And I fully intend to do some of the camping trips where the extent of my planning is " I'm going That way."

So yeah, maybe we should start a different thread to talk about possible routes.

Yes that would be cool Cam but I say we still would be looking at 6-8 week trip. Also I was looking at the map book of the island to see where we could go for island thon. I was thinking we should try a camping trip up north island and going wheeling during the day instead of a constant move. Time frame I figure would be 4-7 days. What you guys think.

that sounds good to me...thing about the island is, if the trip is too long, people can always take off and head home fairly quickly ( unlike canol, if yer way the hell north, or trapped in an alien spaceship...)
or if the weather turns shyte.

So I don't see any reason not to plan for a longer trip than shorter. within reason of course, and then length of stay is sorta optional, people can stay as long as works for them.

I'd offer thoughts on destinations, but I don't have much, the wife is up in winter harbour a lot in the summer, and sounds like there's a ton of exploring to do up there, but it's hard to know what to expect.

could always do the initial exploration trip to have a look see with just a few guys as opposed to the whole crew before hand. Maybe on a decent looking weekend earlier in the year?

If I'm working on the island much this year i might have the opporunity to look around some... I will let you guys know though.
