My neighbor gave me his Catback from a newer 4Runner, 2023 or 2024 I think. It doesn’t quite fit because the pipe that goes from muffler to the Y pipe(towards front of gx, not exhaust pipe) is a couple inches too long. This causes a bunch of the exhaust hangers to not line up properly. Could I shorten that section of pipe to get this to fit? If so, could I use an exhaust coupler and do this myself, or should I take it to a shop and get it cut/welded? I’ve installed an exhaust on the gx before but I don’t know much about exhausts other than bolting them in. Thanks.

I did this on my GX470 with a Borla catback for a 5th gen 4Runner. It's a giant PITA. While I had no problem with the connection to the factory Y-pipe, I did have have to cut off multiple hangers and turn them around or reposition them. Even after that, it didn't quite line up at the exit point under the rear bumper. I had to make a rear hanger for it out of a 3/4" thick urethane block to keep it from hitting the rear framerail. I also ended up cutting about 2" off the rear of the exhaust as it protruded longer than the stock 470 exhaust.

So....yes it will fit, but it's really quite a bit of effort. In my case, I should have spent an extra $150 and got a GX470-specific exhaust instead of messing with a cheaper 5th gen 4Runner exhaust. But, if your exhaust was free, an exhaust shop can probably get it to fit in a few hours of labor (just beware that at least around here - their welds will be carbon steel - as pretty much no exhaust shops weld stainless - I used stainless flux core wire on mine).

Thanks Red. I wound up just using my sawzall and that coupler. I just cut about 2-3” and everything fit. I also used some copper rtv. It worked great, only one hanger doesn’t line up, all others are perfect. The front hanger, right near the y pipe, didn’t fit.

If I could cut the hanger off and turn it around it’d fit perfectly. How did you reattach? JB Weld or something? I don’t weld, wish I did.

I’d also buy a proper fitting exhaust in the future, but this one was free and it’s shiny and new. So for about $25 and an extra 15 minutes of work I can’t complain.

I cut and welded the hangers off. You can buy a cheap flux core welder, mask, and gloves for around $300 at Harbor Freight that will work just fine for little jobs like that (I had one for awhile, and used it a lot, it did crap out and I've since upgraded to a real MIG welder).

Your exhaust sounds like much less of a pain than my Borla was. I'm wondering if that's as issue with the Borla itself or my installation!
