I'm glad that you like it. I got the truck for free, and the warped manifold was the only problem.

Remeber one thing, document everything. I taped all of the vacuum lines and labeled them as to where they go, and drew pictures of every step. That made a big difference.

Open/ exposed ports for extended amount of time: what to do?

Very good encouragement... I just have one problem, I think. You say to pull off the hood, correct? Once the manifolds are off what kind of problems might I have if the engine compartment is with out the hood and the ports on the engine are exposed for a while, say a couple of weeks? Any way to protect them for this long? Lots of dust and crap blowing around in NM this time of year. I'm expecting to have to at least send the mani's to be planed, at worst, finding a crack and having to replace. Getting parts planed/new parts may take a while, plus my time is limited AND I want to take my time to do it right just like you did? Open/ exposed ports for extended amount of time: what to do?

Stuff the ports with a couple of clean, lint-free shop rags. I would should think that that will be fine for a while. Just make sure that you can get them out again!

Cabron, sorry for the hijak!!

Manifold Gaskets and doubling them up

If you double them up as I have seen some suggest, are you supposed to put a thin layer of gasketing material between the gaskets and if so, what should I use . Thanks in advance

I've been told that that's definately not the way to go. Plus, if it goes bad again, which it probably will, who wants to take it apart again?

Not me!

I had one of those SOR kelvar gaskets and it failed with a year. It even feels flimsy. The felpro has been going strong for 3 years. I think that's a good reccomendation.

As in how hard or how expensive?

For a 60, I'd say that it's a 6 or 7 out of 10 just due to all of the vacuum lines and crap. It took me about 10-15 hours to do, but that was spread out over a long time and I also documented everything extremely well. I didn't want to screw it up.

For $$$, I spent about $200 between the manifolds, the gaskets and cleaners.

We have about 6 or 7 hours of actual work in today and have the manifolds off of YOURNAMEHERE's 60. 2 broke studs and a couple of stipped screws really make it go slow. Hopefully it will go back together faster.....

What's with this bolt?

I got wrenchin' on the manifold job too this week-end. That top bolt up against the fire wall ate up a bunch of my time... something funky going on with it. What's up with the threads on this bolt????
I'm guessing that I'll have to do some sort of fix to the hole in the block. Can anyone see what's with this bolt?

Did you ever have any overheating problems? Have the manifolds ever come off before?

We broke the center botl under the carb that connects the intake manifold to the exhust manifold, and one of the egr valve bolts.

I do not think so. This truck only has 60,000 miles on it. I think the problem was that is sat for so long. Lots of rust pitting on the bolts and exhoust manifold. We are replacing alot of the hardware.

David

I have already gotten a few thanks:beer::beer::beer::beer:

if thats in the block then you need to at least run a tap in there to clean up the threads.. I did have 2 bolts that came out looking like that, but they where the 2 that connect the exhaust pipe to the manifold. they were really rusted. took some heat and alot of time to finally get them out. Isnt that back head bolt fun. it took almost as long as all the other combined.

Tap: Any suggestions?

I thought that just getting the ratchet in there with the 14mm socket was tough... how do you get a tap in there? The thingies that connedt the exhaust manifold... they are studs and are held by nuts that you get to from under... Replacing nuts and rethreading studs, are you???
