So this year the :princess: and I are experimenting with an evaporative cooler vs our wall AC unit. We picked up a smaller window unit off Craigslist, and despite being a small unit it's managed to keep our house (1,500 square feet) at least 20* below ambient (if not more), even in this nice 100*+ heat wave we've been having.

Considering our power bill has been a quarter to a third of what last years was, and the house is staying just as cool, we're looking at stepping up into a larger one (the small one will move to the garage, where it's sorely needed). The goal is to have it run through ductwork to each individual room, then have a centrally located whole house fan to pull it out of the house and into the attic (and of course from the attic to the outside).

Looking at evaporative coolers, it doesn't seem that there are a lot of options out there, and they're all expensive. $500 for a box without a motor seems like an awful lot to me for what you get (equivalent fan from Grainger for $100, 1/2 HP motor from HF for $100, $20 pump, $30 in pads, and a bit more for some steel, seems easy enough to build one from scratch...).

Anyone got any good recommendations for brands or places to shop? There's not really anything available in this area outside the big box stores as swamp coolers are not very popular here (despite it being just about the perfect weather, almost always very low humidity and rarely above 90*).

Occasionally they have some at Costco that are pretty decent.

edit: If you want the one I took out last season, it's down in my barn. Works just fine.

Mastercool, but like any evaps, you need a dry, heat otherwise you WILL experiance the swamp factor..

Not familiar with Medford, but Oregon sends up a "no wayno" flag to me..;)

Medford is more like So Cal than Washington. We get our share of rain, but almost all of it in Fall/Winter/Spring. Summer is nearly always dry.

Heck, folks were complaining that it was so muggy the other day....at 20% humidity.

Having been back east, I *KNOW* what REAL humidity is. 90* with 90% humidity sucks.

We do get some muggy days in the summer (less than a weeks worth) and would still have a small wall air conditioner to use those couple days a year.

Sounds alot like southern Az, check out Mastercool, we are happy with ours.

I wouldn't think that would be a problem as long as you kept the paint up. Let it get scratched up, then sure, I could see it.

I've seen lots of swamp coolers that are more than "a few years" old, so I suppose a lot of it depends on the type of water you have and how well you maintain them.

Anyone know anything about BRISA's?

We have a Mastercool unit as well. Be sure to get a Tstat that has auto off feature, like Dial. You can leave it on when going to sleep and it'll turn off after 2/4/6 hours. We also have a water filter in line that seems to help the pad's longevity.

Good luck.

Any of the single pad units like MasterCool.
