I have a 00 taco with 135k and it has recently been making a constant whine. At idle it is noticeable but bump it to 2k and it is real loud, especially with no load. I first thought it was a pulley or something but after further inspection it appears to be from the engine itself. I have never looked into the 3.4L . Is this common? Also my valvetrain seems noisy too, maybe related? Just curious if i should get it looked at or if others have this problem.

Are you sure it's not a pulley? The lower idler pulley is prone to failure around that mileage. Particularly if it's seen much water (not a very well sealed bearing).

Try taking off that belt (I think it's the power steering but don't quote me on it). Then start it up and see if the noise goes away.

If it does just change the pulley, it's $30ish at any parts store.

If not try taking off the other belt and see if that does it.

Not sure about valve train noise, you mean like ticking? Have you changed the timing belt or adjusted the valves recently?

ill give that a shot. The valves do make a light tick, no knocking. I have not changed the timing belt or adjusted the valves.

Just wondering if pulling the belt off worked???... I have the same issue with my '99 4Runner...

Just had maintenance on my 93 V6 3.0 and ya can't even believe how much quiter itis with the new idler pulley!! did PS Pump, Timing Belt, Idler Pulley and the bearing was SINGING HARD!!, both seals behind timing chain and all v belts !! thing runs like a new one!! only 233K miles on truck, do not know when last timing belt was changed but from the looks of it, it had been a while!! i have put 93K on the truck since i got it with 140K on it and this was the first major service done!! almost too late!!
