Hi,

I have been looking to purchase an FJ45 (in Kenya) for some time and feel that I have finally located one. I can't give too much detail (such as year, etc as I haven't seen the paperwork yet) but this is the situation:

1. 2F engine (with some things missing like the carb missing)

2. 4 speed gearbox

3. Not much rust

4. Original axles

I felt that the 2F is a slow engine and started thinking about what engine I could put in with the respective gearbox.

My thoughts are putting in a 1KZ-T (4 cylinder) with a manual gearbox. I would use the original axles of the FJ45 with the above configuration. The 1KZ-T engines are usually used on the 70 series Prados I believe.

What would you guys do - or are there any alternative engines I should consider?

The 45 will be used for 70% highway use and 30% offroad - although our highways are pretty bad as well.

Sorry I haven't taken any pics as I didn't have my camera when I saw the car.

Many thanks.

Personally if you can source an inline-six TD such as the 1HD-FT or 1HT, you will be happier IMHO. I would opt for the mechanical diesel. While you are at it, send one my way if you find a good source.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for your reply.

I assume you meant a 12HT or a 1HZ. What are your reasons for suggesting an inline six because the max power and torque figures between a 1HZ & 1KZTE are as follows:

Max Power @ 3600 RPM 1 KZTE 96kW

Max Torque @ 2000 RPM 1 KZTE 289Nm

Max Power @ 3600 RPM 1 HZ 99kW

Max Torque @ 2000 RPM 1 HZ 279Nm

Regards,

Dash

those figures are similar but kep in mind one has a turbo on it. Put a turbo on that 1HZ then you'll have a real work truck. The beauty of the 1HZ is the lack of electronics which the KZ is riddled with and the fact that the HZ is so simple that you can fix it in the middle of no where with relatively little.

Agreed - the 1HZ with a turbo would be awesome.

However if I used the 1KZT with the manual pump would that make it kind of on par with the non - turbo 1HZ. Just going by the facts that the Max Power & Torque figures of the 1 HZ & the 1 KZT are somewhat similar?

turbos affect engines greatly on how drasticly the power comes into the engine and brings it to life. I would feel the KZ would be relying on that turbo a fair bit if you need those power specs and could leave you with a cracked head after a while seeing how they are known for doing that. I'd go with the proven 1HZ, even without a turbo its reliable.

I actually got those power specs from what is quoted on some websites regarding the engines so I assume they could both delivery similar power and torque.

The 45 weighs about 1850kg and the Toyota Hilux Surf SSR-X (which used the 1KZ-TE engine) weighs 1730kg - so not a massive difference considering that the Surf is a 5 seater (more passengers, more weight) and the FJ45 would be a 2/3 seater.

The Surf's gear ratios are:

1st: 4.313
2nd: 2.330
3rd: 1.436
4th: 1.00
5th: 0.838

So, I don't know how the FJ45 compares and will the gearing on the 45's axles need to be changed to work with a 1KZ-TE or even a 1HZ engine?
