Hello everyone!

Some of you might recall my previous post asking for help in order to find the best possible combination in order to increase my tyres, trying to mantain a good relation between speed and torque.

Well, a new variable came in the game!

A week ago, my mechanic got a 1990 HD-80 to fix, since it has suffer a hard impact from below (a strong storm took away a water drainage cover form the street, and thig guy ran on to it).
I cna buy this car together with a friend og mine in order to scrab different parts, ata very good price!

This TLC has an 1HD-T, but i{m not sure which gearbox comes with...

My idea is to mantain my H42 gearbox and just replace the engine. I´m not looking for speed, just some extra HP in order to put some 33".

This tyres would act as the 5th gear that i´m missin on my h42.

Beside that, I´m not sure if the gearbox of the HD80 will fit on my short chasis BJ70.
And the other reason for mantaining my grearbox is not loosing the PTO which i LOVE!!!

so, after doing my homeworks for several hours (searching and reading A lot of information regarding engine swaps), i coud not find if i can put the 1HZ-T with my h42 gearbox.

I did found a bellhousing that allows to use a 1HD-T with a H55, and as far as I know, if it fits the H55, shold also fit my BJ70.

I would really appreciate if you could help me out with this issue.

Sorry for making this story so long, but I always like to tell the complete story instead of just asking the question straight away!

Regards!
Pablo

I would double check that the H151 gearbox wont fit on your BJ70.The current model 70 series
are using a very similar transmission and they have the same wheelbase.

You might have to make a new crossmember and shorten the drive shafts.

The gearbox type should be on the plate on the firewall.

Hello!!!

Thanks for the feedback.
As soon as I get back home, i´ll check which trans does the hd80 has.

Never the less, i´ve recieve an email from Cruiserparts which confirms that their bellhousing fits between the 1HD-T enigne and the H42 gearbox, so at least here is one possibility.

Fitting the engine in the engine bay is not a problem,: Just as I pointed before, a fiend of mine has done it in a BJ75, and engines bays are the same between 70 and 75....

Here is a post of my friend documenting this change. It´s in spanish, but you can open it with google translate if language is a problem. There are nice pics of the job.

Yes, 1HD-T can be fitted into BJ70, I'm not sure whether the H150 is a straight bolt in or some modification need to be done.
following thread here as I am new to cruiser!
Do you mean that I can fit an HD-T engine in place of my 3B engine which is proving impossible to get parts for in Zimbabwe? Any modification to the bell housing?

I also wanted to put a 1hz or a 1hd-t into my bj70. You need the 1hz to h55 bell housing and input shaft for the gearbox. I have decided to look for a 3.0 d4d rather

Good call

It might be worth noting that to change the input shaft involves abit of work. Ie , pulling the gearbox to bits to install the new input shaft. Not a 5 min job when you take into account removing transfercase etc , much easier to just find a 1HZ H55F manual box and whack that in if possible

I wanted to do this conversion too in my BJ70 but because of this exact issue of mating a 1HDT to my fine spline gearbox , ended up going down 12HT/H55F route ( kept my PTO!) much easier/cheaper for similar gains

Good luck!

I've decided to go down the path of the 1hz conversion but I am buying a dead troopy and am going to try transfer everything over any recommendations as to the most compatible Landcruiser series with the 1hz setup to the bj70 12v?

which model is that troopy? 75 or 78 series? 78series use r151f gearbox which sits firther and requires modification of cross member.

Sorry I meant to say I am yet to find one but I'm not sure on the most compatible model of Landcruiser with the 1hz setup in it that would fit into my car with the least mods if possible as in do my 1986 bj70 diffs suit a certain model better than others is there some way to keep my gearbox in and use a more compatible model with that gearbox, I'm quite new to this conversion so sorry if my questions are not to clear, basically I want to find a complete 1hz setup and change it over but if there is a model of 1hz engine and gearbox and transfer that will suit my model 1986 bj70 better then what Landcruiser should I try get it from?
