engine stalling in reverse A440f Code 25

O.k. so I hid this question in my other most recent post. Perhaps its best to start a seperate one. After installing new R&ps (4.88), I went for a test drive on the fourdyce trail. To my dismay my engine would idle rough and stall when I would put it in reverse in low range. My solution was to put it in high when every I needed to back up or turn around, as high would just make it idle rough (low) and not stall. I guess I should clarify that this is in an 88 FJ62 with the auto A440f. Tranny fluid checks out o.k. not perfect but not bad and it never overheated. This transmission is getting up there in age 214k miles but never had any problem before and why does it appear after change in axle gears and only in reverse. I'm going to drain/ refill and clean the filter this week but am I looking at bigger problems?

Had the same thing happen with my rig with the 3fe/a440 in it, turned out to be a vaccumm leak.

I hoped it would be that simple, but today on the way to work I got a check engine light and a trouble code of 25 (over lean mixture). Got home and checked the FSM for the code and got a plethora of different things to check, injectors, o2 sensors, air flow meter, ecu, and a few others. It seemed to make sense (kind of in a wierd way) that if my mixture was to lean Wally would being idling pretty rough, so I checked the air flow meter as per FSM and it checked out, then checked the o2 sensor as per FSM and ended up with zero volt fluctuations while doing the first check and 5volts between vf1 and e1 at which point the FSM says "Repair (over lean) WTF does that mean?

I know this sounds crazy but check for tears in the tube running from your air filter to the intake. I had this problem for a year before the first Katemcy and Dearborne found a tear in there. The problem only presented itself when in reverse or on a steep incline because the motor mounts flexed enough to open up the tear in the plastic and let air in. 3FE's wont run with a major vacume leak like that - after the Mass Air Flow sensor.

Dearborne taped it up with Gaffers tape, which is still on there.

If not that, check for vacume leaks per lowtide's idea. Start with the vacume lines to the transfer case as that could also be affected by torque on an old motor mount.

Euclid, crazy as it sounds YOU ARE A GOD. Took longer to resize the photo than to remove the intake hose. So perhaps I need to look at my motor mounts next eh? Thanks again,
Nick

I felt just as excited when Dearborn figgured this one out for me.

I doubt your mounts are bad. The engine should move a good bit. Worth a check, but they are probably still ok.

Right on, a little black duct tape and help from you guys and problem solved I'm so happy
