Newbie question. Don't have time to check the FAQ as I am on a time restriction at an internet coffee shop.
Drove from Abbotsford to Penticton straight through. Got to Pentiction, shut off the truck, but the engine kept running for about 2 minutes, then shut down.... Whats up with this? On a short haul, it doesn't do this, however i have experienced this a couple of times on my travels to Penticton, but this time it was a longer run on then usual. Temperature outside was below zero, and the temp gauges in the vehicle were all normal....

Is this something I should worry about???

Thanks all.

Maybe check the edic, perhaps it is not always working. when it is not working see where the rod for the edic is sitting and compare it to when it does work properly. If it is not the edit, not sure what it would be.

There is no EDIC on a 12HT. It uses a VSV like the 13BT.

If it is a turbo timer, it is very well hidden. It may be the VSV is on it's way out, but it is strange it happens only after long runs. Anyway, my vote is not not worry about it and keep running it.

After a good run like that it is good for the engine to idle for a while anyway, to ensure things cool down a bit.

If it does fail, it seems to fail in the run position, (tempting fate here). To shut it down you would need to manually close the intake shutter, and it will stop the engine. I am not at home right now to post a picture of what/where the shutter is.

Thanks for the feedback... no run on while in town. I will know more when I drive back home...

Here is a picture of the intake shutter vacum pot. The arm that come out the pot is attached to the shutter. You can pull the shutter closed to stop the truck if the vsv fails. As soon at the shutter is almost closed the intake air sucks it closed and holds it there until the engine stops. The shutter starves the engine of air, halting the combustion process. If you have a good vacum system, it will stay closed for a while. Pulling off the rubber vacum line that goes to the pot will release the vacum and allow the pot to release the shutter so it is in the run position.

Suggestion: Remove the rubber vacum line from the pot, start and then stop the truck a few times manually, so you know what to do it you ever have to.

Hi everybody!

Fitchick, there's another trick, there's a shutting off lever on the injection pump. It's a vertical lever lelow the VSV that Greg was showing, on the leftmost part of the injection pump. If it's not the vsv acting up, this is usefull to know.

Bye.

Max.

i had the same problem on my 86 HJ-60, it was worked down to a bad ground.. it was ok when the ground wires were cold.. becasue there is "lower" Resistance in a wire when its cold. when the motor warmed up nice and warm the wires would also warm up.. incressing the Resistance to the Vacume thinngy, (its the Doohickey that opens the intake shutter).

"If it does fail, it seems to fail in the run position, (tempting fate here). To shut it down you would need to manually close the intake shutter, and it will stop the engine. I am not at home right now to post a picture of what/where the shutter is."

My truck would do that ^^^^^^ But then it also wouldnt start tell after it cooled off.. the shutter wasnt opening after.

so check ur Doo-hickey... what i did was spliced the ground wire (black and white one i belive) and just put a Terminal end on it and bolted it to where the Doo-hickey is mounted. ( on the side of the intake) about 3 inches away from the Shutter valve.

Hope this helps u out a bit

Max, yes...good idea and thanks for the reminder. We use that level for compression tests all the time.

Andy, interesting, and it sounds like it may well be it. Thanks. Your shutter would not come back to the run position as the vacum system was good, and holding it closed. Taking the vacum line off would release the shutter.

Let ya all know what happens when i get back into Abby.... thanks for the input and the pictures (they really do help)... I think and hope I can get it all figured out with out totally sounding to "female". ahhhh - The joys of owning a cruiser.

Just got back home - non stop from Penticton. Shut er down and no run-on...???? Yes I am confused....

I had the hubs locked on the way up and back. I pushed the 4WD button through the pass outside of Princeton. 4Wd Kicked in - That was cool.... As soon as the snow cleared, pushed the button again, and all was normal... I like it :grinpimp:
