engine like 13B-T?

I am trying to find a mechanic who would be willing to work on my 13B-T.
When I tell them what I have they say No.

What engine is similar to mine but more common in USA?
I am most interested in getting injection set right.

Any Denso fuel injection specialist should be able to manage it. I would be looking for a diesel injection shop, rather than a mechanic

I too have a toyota diesel in America! I too have fretted about "who" would actually work on the diesel stuff IDK about. I reached out to this shop and they said they are willing to look at it despite not being a diesel-specific shop. Report back your experience

I'll swear by United Diesel (link) in Springfield, VA. (No affiliation, but it's the kind of place I'd wanna work)

They don't do engine rebuilds per se (I've asked - haha!), but getting injection timing right, rebuilding injectors and injection pumps... pros.

I've been in there four or five times (and only twice for a job that pays them any money) and every time - every time - the guys behind the counter took the time to talk to my about my vehicle, the engine, the injection pump, blow-by, smoke, not priming properly, etc., etc. They educated me on what *should* be happening in my engine bay (03/81 BJ40 from S. Amer), what might actually be happening, and what I could do to fix it WITHOUT paying them. Sure, they were 100% willing to take my injectors and rebuild them. They certainly would have been happy to take a sizable pile of hundreds to rebuild my injection pump. But instead of saying "can't really help you without seeing it", or "you'll just have to bring it in", they took the time to talk to a diesel noob and make me smarter and better able to understand my own truck.

And when they did do work, it was top-notch and fairly priced. I cannot say enough about the staff of this place.

4BD1t. The machine shop that did my work said it's pretty similar to the Isuzu 4BD. Same 102mm bore size, just a longer stroke. Pretty much the same engine.

Check with a place that does irrigation pivots, the Diesel engines. Those are Isuzu a lot of the time and someone has to manage those/repair them. These engines are stupid simple.

Pretty much unheard of in Australia. One shop told me that when they come across something they havent done before, they reach out to "mates" or buddies in the industry for advice or actual help.

So what's the actual problem with the fuel injection on the 13BT? Is there a thread elsewhere on it.?

Here in the States it appears to me that more and more shops are specialized not by what the technicians are able to do but rather what they believe will make them the most profit.
Body shops often advertise they are experts in collision repairs. This allows them to overcharge insurance companies, rake in cash, and cause everyone’s insurance rates to rise. If asked to dig into rusted panels, they say no and are sometimes offended.
I took a trailer tire and wheel to a tire shop to get it mounted and balanced. They refused saying they can only mount what they sell. Tire prices seemed high.
Diesel shops near me are “deleting” trucks’ ecu’s and charging a fortune to enable customiers to ruin the environment.
Craftsmanship, helpfulness, and problem solving are not good business models here.

I am getting more black smoke lately and I am older now to the point where paying an expert is appealing to me.
I may have found an expert about an hour from my home.
I will know more next week.

There's nothing special about the injection pump on the 13bt, it's a denso "A pump". Basically the same as the bosch equivalent, and fitted to various tractor, plant and industrial engines. Any diesel shop that works on mechanical injection pumps should be able to rebuild it. The 4bt and 4bd1t run bosch A pumps in some applications, to give you examples of US market engines running the same type of pump.

Inline pumps are known for having a very long life without the need for maintenance or rebuilds. If your pump was worn out you would probably see less fueling, not more (black smoke). More likely to be worn injectors or turbo.

I think it is a timing or fuel screw problem. It is not way out of spec but I can tell something is off. Injectors were rebuilt by reputable folks in Georgia a few years back.

I would be getting the injectors looked at first. Timing on diesel injection pumps does not go out of whack on its own. I would turn the fuel down an 1/8th of a turn and another 1/8th if there is no difference. Mark it so you can turn it back to where you started.

All B series engines had Bosch rotary style pumps as well as Zexel in-line pumps concurrently.

They were market specific.

Interesting, whats the earliest rotary pump ? I have never seen a rotary pre 1982 and never seen a 13bt with a rotary in any market.
All the 3B II engines with the 1HZ style valve covers i have seen are rotary not inclined.

I always thought it was year, model and market but I came from the Aussie / JDM market so maybe it was always market and I just never knew cause everything was available local .
