I am still mulling over the options and can't make up my mind.

I am not a manual tranny person. I drive them, but I don't like 'em.

My plan includes D60's or Corp 14 bolts, maybe 4.10 gears. 37 to 39 tires.

For my '71 I am thinking of a 350 TBI motor.

For the Tranny and Tcase I am still undecided.

I am leaning towards a 700R4 and Dana 300, but I could also go Th400 to a NP205. I found a deal on a 700R4 with an AA NP205 adapter (minus the tcase). I also have a line on a 700R4 with a D300 adapter.

I am worried about the crawl ratio. 700 with a D300 gives me a 32:1. If I go with the NP205 I might need to add a 203 range box to get the gearing low enough...

Suggestions and thoughts? I want good trail ability and some rock, but I don't know how hard core I will go. I just want to do it right the first time and not re-do it later.

700R/Dana 300.

Would not think twice about it.

I would gear the axles at 4.88, if you have to change the ratios in the axles...

There are piles of upgrade parts available for the Dana 300, or even better, install one of the Dana 300 based upgraded transfer cases out there. (Atlas II or STaK)

I would love an Atlas, but too much green for me. I found a 700r4 on Craigs List today that comes with an adapter for a D300 for $550. Only 2k miles on the rebuilt tranny so seems a good deal. I pick it up tomorrow.

That sound like the smart way to go, Just put a nice tranny cooler on the 700:beer:
