Anyone tried to pass DEQ running propane? Last time I was at DEQ (Oregon) they didnt even raise my hood and since it a 1985 I'm pretty sure its still carb legal. Anyone got any input?

So I called DMV and DEQ... DMV said all they need is me to mark "P" on registration on the renewal but to call DEQ to make sure. DEQ said that propane still needs the basic "sniff" test for propane and still needed to run a cat but Natural gas is exempt from everything. They also said it may need a visual inspection to be up to C.A.R.B standards. Judging from the 5 people I had to talk I dont think think it should be a problem. I have a feeling someone will look at it and say "Yep, looks like its running on propane." Deq is also sending me a packet with info.

Overall, it doesnt seem like it would be a problem from the DEQ guy I talked to.

My 85 on propane didn't even require it in Utah. But I was going to run one anyway to see what the relative emissions are.....

For my 79 FJ40 I had to get the truck certified as propane only by the Nevada DMV after that, I did not have to smog it ever again.

Considering propane is a component of natural gas it would be silly to smog pane and not nat gas. I think the person you talked to was suffering from male answer syndrome.

fxxxing commie bastards in Ore!! Even in uber liberal Wa state the cut off is 25 years old. since they skip years I only have one more go around with emissions testing.

nevada the cutoff for emissions is 1967..

Yeah, I couldnt really get straight answers and the guy I talked even admitted that he wasnt fully sure of anything. He said I was the first guy to call about it in a very very long time. He's mailing me an info packet with what he thinks will be the definitive answers I'm looking for. Mace did your set up have to be C.A.R.B certified?

There was not a single certification from Carb on mine. They looked at it and said "yep, it is all propane now" Done.. BTW, you pretty much had to pull the fuel tank as well.

kind of a primer on the rules in NV

Looks like Cali still requires a smog check
21.065Propane (LPG) or Natural Gas (LNG) Conversion
A smog certification is required for original registration, transfer, and biennial renewal of a vehicle converted to liquid propane gas (LPG), liquid natural gas (LNG), or compressed natural gas (CNG). Conversion may be complete or dual with gas.
EXCEPTION: The Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) exempts heavy-duty vehicles weighing 14,001 pounds or more GVWR (gross vehicle weight rating) powered by natural gas (fuel code “N”) from all smog certification requirements.

Cali is going to start emission testing peoples farts by year 2010 :)

My Impco carburator is CARB certified and I think that is all that is necessary.

Wild thing about where I live.... There is no emissions testing at all. I walked into register and said it runs on propane. They gave me a "clean fuel clean air" plate that lets me drive in the HOV lane as a loner AND park in any metered spot for free!

BTW, I got to claim 2K worth of federal tax deductions for the conversion to an "alternative fuel" that I did on my 40.

Talk about a win win situation :D

Me too! And 50% cost of conversion credit from the state (up to 2k).
And of course as we all know ARB Lockers and OME lifts are all required for the conversion..

I have to believe that Oregon has the same incentives.

This is couldnt be better news... to bad I missed tax season this year. This gives me all the incentive to go propane vs. fiddling with making more ponies with my TBI setup.

btw, long drives with propane suck monkey butt...

filling stations are few and far between..

LT responded to our local LC board about Propane and it sounds like he's got to register it now that the vehicle is registered in P-town. Hopefully he'll have the answers I'm looking for when he gets done.

I think TBI is more expensive. BUT not a bad way to go if you want to run Ethanol.

No biggie there... wheelin is about 30mins from my front door and Tillamook State forest has a shell with Propane half way there. :) My little Honda takes the DD duty for work and hopefully a tow rig is in the distant future whether it be for the 60 or a buggy.

What do you figure for range on a forklift tank with a healthy v-8?

Any opinions on dual fuel that gotpropane offers?
