Howdy all,

First time on Mud, recently bought a 1986 FJ60. Not new to cars, do all of my own work and really love my s***ty old 'Cruiser. The latest development is that after fabricating up my new 2.5" exhaust, all of the sudden my running lights, cluster lights and blower fan all stopped working in unison. Also, at the same time, my truck will no longer idle without the choke being pulled. This had happened once before but fixed itself the next day.

Sounds to me like a bad ground or something of the sort. Has anyone ever had a similar experience? I have been trying to track down all of the grounds on this truck but unfortunately do not have the service manual yet.

The idle problem could be the idle solinoid on the back of the carb. It should click when you turn on the ignition. If not, then the wiring is bad, or the solinoid is dying.

I had almost the same exact problem on my 62. I ended up having a bad ground at the back center of the truck near the spare tire. I fixed that and all my problems went away! And welcome to Mud!!! TONS of great info here!!

Thanks for the tip on the idle solenoid! I actually recently cleaned that ground, but the truck recently incurred a high rock induced muffler deletion... so I may have knocked something loose.

Very Helpful.

I am happy to join up!

Found the problem! When my muffler was forcibly relocated by a rock ledge it pulled the catalyst back with it, tearing up the wiring for the catalyst temperature probe. Which in turn tore up the wiring under the center console.

After poking around under the console it started working again, now I just need to repair a couple of wires.

Thanks for the advice guys.
