Electric Temperature guage showing "E" or wrong temps radomly

Anyone have problems (sporatic) with their electronic temperature guage (stock/factory) inlcudes altimeter which works fine.

I have a '90 HZJ73 and it invariably displays "E" for both inside and outside temperatures. Also, occasionally switches or appears to switch to F temperature instead of C.

I have checked the connection several times but this happens very randomly. Also the intensity of the illumination changes occassionaly as well, without turning on running or head lights?

Any ideas on what's wrong or how to fix this?

Though you said that you checked the connections, from your description I would say there is a connection/current issue.

When the guage is acting up, what do other instruments?
When they are behaving normal whilst the guage is irratic, check the guage internally.
Maybe a bad soldered connection at the printed board?

Thxs...I think it is a connection as well ...once it get warmer (currently -21C) I'll delve into this a bit more!

I have had simmilar problems with my BJ74. It only seems to happen when I wash the truck or it goes from very hot to very cold. ie in the shop to outside. I am not sure where the sensor is but it seems like it could be a moisture issue in my case anyway

Electronic temperature gauge

Never thought of humidity as we are quite dry here in Calgary but think it is probably wiring connection adn will check out when spring arrives..thanks for the response.

i replaced my exterior sender with an Oil temperature sender.

mine would read -40, then -28, then -14, then -6 then simply E.

now it reads pretty close with the new sensor.
