I am installing TBI on my SBC. The only place I could fit the pump is underneath. It is tucked up almost to the body and I feel the location is safe, but I am worried about water submersion. The pump is a Carter P5001. The directions do state to keep it away from road spray. The electrical plug area looks to be sealed and the plug itself is a gasket inside. I plan to RTV the heck out of it to be certain.

Do others run external pumps underneath with good results?

I run mine on top of the frame rail. it has more problems with heat than anything. also needs hard lines to prevent collapsing of rubber lines. that's my next project.

I have a walbro pump on my passenger side frame rail....I've crossed a few creeks and small river...water almost cresting the hood...so far never had a problem. Of course when I do ...it will be a big deal if the engine shuts down.

The closer to the fuel tank the better. Most electric pumps are great pushers, but lousy suckers (there's a pun there, I'm sure).

Yep another one for the frame rail and as close to the tank as possible, I didn't have room to get mine on the inside so I made a bracket to sit it up on top, I have to watch sticks and debris knocking it off and will probably modify the bracket to give it a bit more protection one day :)

Mine is closer to the tank than pumps mounted to the frame rail. I have a 700R4 trans so I had to cut the stock cross member and add my own. The pump is mounted to the cross member just under the hole where the fuel hose goes under the body. I'll get pics this weekend.
