Just got back from a vacation to Egypt, where I went on a tour of the Western Desert. Once you enter the desert itself, almost every vehicle you see at the oasis towns are Landcruisers! The egyptians have a special affinity for the Turbo Diesel FJ62, with manual transmission - is that a HJ61? I have too many pictures to post, so I'll probably put the rest in a web album. Enjoy!

I was in 70 series, with a 2HT? My diesel engine knowledge is lacking. They didn't like the 70 series as much because the hub gaskets blow and leak oil all the time.

And the last one, probably my favorite. They setup a campsite using the roof rack and two poles. Fabric is strung up from the roof rack and from the horizontal pole, then they put down a carpet. It makes a place to eat and sleep out of the sand.

Wonderful pics. Love the in town pic with all the Toyota cars and trucks. Looks almost like home to me. :hillbilly: Now if only we could figure out a way to get the good condition trucks into the states legally, we'd be rolling in... Land Cruisers. Not a huge market for them around so I've noticed. But still, would be cool to get a hand on one of those things.

nice pictures, looking forward to see more

Strange,I thought they had the same hubs asa 60 series . I have 2x7* series and neither have leaked in 5 years

Magic,

Nice pictures. Mostly every country in the Middle East loves to drive the Land Cruisers for it is tested and proven all over the world.:D
Where in Egypt did go for vacation? You own a cruiser?

I'm going to try and put the rest in a web album today, I've been busy working on my brakes all weekend. I don't know why the hubs on the 70 had a tendancy to fail. I think it may have been deep sand related. Does the 70 have rear hubs that protrude from the rims? As for me, I have a '87 FJ60. It's got a 383 stroker and nv4500 transmisson right now, but if everything goes as planned, it's getting a Cummins 4bt diesel later this year. I'm hoping to make it an expedition truck. Maybe take it to panama, B.C. and Alaska. My Egypt trip started in Cairo and Giza. 3 days there, then 2 days in the western desert, then south to Aswan, followed by a Nile Cruise north to Luxor, finally back to Cairo. We saw all the major sites: the pyramids, sphinx, valley o/t kings, queens, hapsepshut temple, edfu, etc. It was incredible.

If your truck is fixed and running, you may want to join us here: https://forum.ih8mud.com/chit-chat-...l-hampton-roads-coastal-carolina-toyotas.html

Now, you saw Egypt maybe it is time to see HI in mid-January:grinpimp:

Wow awesome pictures! Its not just Egypt, all the way down through Africa Landcruiser rule the roads. Actually even in the towns every body drives Toyota's (usually corolla's at you in the case on Nairobi!)

This is the reason why I chose my HJ60 to do my London to Cape Town trip (via where you have been) there are loads of them around, meaning lots of spare parts and mechanics who know what they are doing with them.

I've actually been told by people in the UK to leave the engine / injection alone - because if I want to rebuild either its cheaper / easier / better to get it done in Africa!

Now if you're talking Kenya that's a different set of pics that I never posted from back in '06. ;)

And who says parts for the 3B will be obsolete in the next 5 years. I think people in developing countries will fuel that market for quite awhile yet. Either that or they will jimmy something together with a toothpick, some scotch tape and a plastic bag for a diagram replacement.

I especially like the pick of the 40 with twine holding the front bumper in place.

Human ingenuity always amazes me! Great pic's!

I watched an Anthony Bourdan "No Reservations" (love that show) that took place in Saudi Arabia. All Land Cruisers!!! He went on a overnight with the Bedouins who now use Land Cruisers, and a Mitsu or two, instead of camels. They had the same camp set-up you posted a picture of, but on a little larger scale. I'd love to know more about how they construct it. It looks as though they bury the lower edge of the vertical sheets and then lay down the floor carpets. Oh, and please post more pics of the Egypt trip, or a link to a gallery.
