Hey All,

I am having a big problem with the darn EGR system. It all started when i was on the highway 2 days ago as i gave my LC some gas to pass a car on the highway it felt like she wouldn't go anywhere. So i pulled over opened the hood looked around and the exhaust header looked red, i did not know if that was normal but i was skeptical about it. Well i closed th hood, couldn't find a thing at all.

About 30mins after i started hearing a hissing sound every time i gave the LC some gas. It actually sounded like an exhaust leak. So i saw a truck stop and went in there. Opened the hood again with the engine running this time and had my girl give it some gas and low and behold the little hose that comes from the EGR modulator was off. So i thought "quick fix" right, WRONG. As i got myself into the engine conpartment to re attach the hose i saw that there was a hole burned into the bottom of the Modulator like if i took a cigar and burned a hole on the bottom of the modulator. So now i thought??? WHAT THE HECK!! i put the hose back on the bottom of the modulator and went on my way.

Well the hissing stopped until about 20 miles when all of a sudden the hissing became worse. No i was going up and down mountains and the damn truck was going from 60mph to 30mph and when i stepped on the gas the damn truck wouldn't go anywhere Weird right?

So i pulled over again and opened the hood and wham, the hose was blown off, the bottom of the modulator was really toasted and that was that. So i took the modulator off the truck completely, called the toyota dealer and ordered the new improved Modulator.

Next day drove all the way home with the damn hissing sound. Picked up the new modulator and on the way home the check engine light went on. Well i figured i will just clear it after i installed th new modulator.

Got home put the new Mod in and drove home and the damn hose popped off again??????

What is making the hose pop off?? Is the EGR valve itself bad or is something clogged. I do thinkl there is something wrong with the EGR valve because when i did drive with no hose comming out of the EGR valve the hissing sound was all the time not on and off but all the time. Isn't the EGR supposed to close and open or is it supposed to be open all the time????

Well i am looking for some help here any would be appreciated!!!

I am goign to pull the EGR Valve and clean it out then see what happens.

Is the temp gauge moving at all? Only time I had a problem like that my modulator popped like a jiffy popcorn - it was from the engine overheating when the fan clutch went. Keep in mind, that as you'll see in other posts, the temp needle does not move linearly. When it even just moves a tad it's overheading.

I don't think its the fan clutch, it threw a code but after i out the new modulator in i cancelled it. Its n ot throwing any codes now. Does the exhaust flow throught that EGR valve at very high volume?? Because when i took the little hose off you can really feel that pressure. I think the EGR is stuck in OPEN mode??? I just think thats weird becuase i only have 44K miles on the truck. Would a broken Fan clutch throw a code?? I am not overheating.

Quit whining and have some patience. You are on the east coast and a lot of forum members aren't. Give it time and you will likely receive some more feedback.

I had other problems with a code 26 that led me back to removing the EGR and giving it a complete clean. Give this a shot first a world of difference in performance along with removing the K&N air filter.

I didn;t check the code. I figured it was because the EGR Modulator was disconected for about 150 miles that it threw the code. But the truck is a Midas right now because i have found out that the front cat is bad. That is what is casusing the backpressure build up into the EGR which caused the EGR modulator to burst. So its $500.00 instead of $2,000.00!!!! Magnaflow Cat 5mph gain and happy me!!!. Hope fully that was the only problem. I hope its not a fuel/air ratio problem. When i opened the hood the first time i found the bad EGR Modulator i saw that the Exhaust manifolds were cherry red, what can cause this. I called up tlc4x4 they told me a bad cat. I called up Toyota they told me that i cannot destroy a cat like that. The only way that that could happen is if the fuel is too rich or the truck is burning oil. I am not burning oil i can see that but fuel air?? that would come up as a code right??? Would going fast off whoops with the truck bust a cat or loosen it up???

Engine misfire due to plug, ignition wire, or distributor problem or leaking fuel injector are examples of problems that can result is too much raw fuel getting to the cats and causing the cats to overheat and subsequently fail.

Wouldn't that throw a code???

I know that there are codes for misfire, but don't know what the threshold for reporting is. I don't know if a leaking injector gets reported by the engine management system. For how long of a period did you truck sit unused? Was it driven on year + old gas?

Well i purchased the truck about a month and a half ago. 1997 TLC like it just came off the line mint. 38k on the clock all checked out and carfaxed. I had a toyota dealer look at her and they said Unreal!! Well the truck was a gararge queen with the pervious owner and didn't see much use at all. The wife used it to go grocery shopping and mall cruising so i guess it has been ran very short distances a few times a year. When ii bought the truck i used the rest of the fuel that was in it and then filled it up with premium the first tank. One day after some offroading and going through whoops with the truck and some good speeds i heard what sounded to be like a rock in the cat sheild?? so i hit the cat and sprayed water directly into it with a power washer trying to get the rock out. Guess it wasn;t a rock after all. I just got back from Midas and they installed 1 big cat in place of the two. Nice job and the cat is completely out of harms way the way i had them mount it. I ran the tuck and it sounds a little deeper and definatly feels like i gained a hp or two. The manifold is running like it should. I still have the wistle that everyone has and i'm a cat short and happy that i'm not out 2k for OEM pieces. I will definately let you know the outcome in a few weeks. see how she holds up. 5yr 50k warranty on the cat, Magnaflow. Nice deal for $500.00.

Well, if you smacked the converter against the ground I wouldn't be suprised that would cause physical damage that could have ended up blocking the exhaust.
