First sorry this isnt hardcore but figured some of you may remember back in the day using a one. background had this cruiser for over 18 years and never been in the front axle until now when Im doing my soa. It has never felt like a locker up there ever and so Im thinking it never worked for me ( have aussie in rear). gears and pin holes look new it has one tiny spring cover left so Im guessing its an ez locker but has brass pins in the bottom of holes that springs go in do these come out? looks like it was way out of spec in the center way to wide believe this the problem need thicker shims. what about the caps for springs there is no longer support for this so no parts do I need the caps? should I try lock right springs? should I just toss it and get another aussie? thanks for any help pictures to follow

It looks like a lock rite locker, but I don't know for sure. The spring and pin kit for a lock rite is ~$12 so I don't think it would hurt to try a new spring and pin kit. However, if its a locker that is made by another company and has been discontinued replacement parts likely aren't available.

Looks like you're tearing down the diff. Are you replacing gears and bearings?
While its apart, I'd probably consider upgrading to an ARB or a full carrier detroit.

Wish I could afford a carrier locker just had 3rd out to put in cut and turned housing. Guess it's one of the first lock rights been in there since 93 ez didn't come out til 97 teeth are still sharp ordered a pin and spring set but not the same as what's in there now. single spring flat tab covering and no hole to push pins and springs in . Just see how new compare for length. Put thicker shims in and see if it was worth the effort. Thanks for replying

Looks like a lockright to me! Strange it didint work though..

Normally if a lockright is not working it would either not unlock, or only be locked to one side.. it would most certainly not act like an open diff.

Send it to me if you ditch it! ;) ive had good luck with mine after i replaced the sheer pins with chunks of Grade 8 Bolt Shank.

That's a really old lock rite. 1st generation. To remove the pins & springs you remove those brass plugs, They have holes in them that should be threaded. You thread a machine screw into it till it bottoms out, then turn the screw 1/4 or 1/3 turn. The brass plug should rotate w/the screw & pull it out. That removes the spring tension on the pin. Slide the pins & springs back into their respective parts. Do that w/all 4 plugs. From there it's sort of a PIA to get the parts out. Be carefull, IIR, you will have the brass plugs, 4 pins, 4 springs & I think, 4 little discs that are about 1/4" in diameter.

Assembly is a little tricky.

Thanks was wondering how those brass plugs came out. It was so loose when I pulled the center pin the locker hub pushed out. Looks like all but one disk might be gone or maybe in the oil. I'm planning on shiming it than testing it with some pipe wrenches before I install it. Probably should just toss it and get something new but this one still looks good

Don't toss it. Call lockrite

After about 10 yrs of hard wheeling w/mine, I finally broke a pin in it. I called lockrite to get another pin. I described what I had to the tech guy & he was confused. Evidently this unit design was b4 his time & parts weren't available. He told me they offer a 1 time deal for a lockrite purchaser w/a major problem & would sell me a new 1 @ 1/2 the price if I returned the old unit. This all happen a long time ago, so I don't know if they still do this deal.
