I know this has been covered before...just starting to :censor: that I can't find it using the search tool.

Anyway, how can I tell, without going to each Land Cruiser I find and looking/driving it, if it has factory lockers? Most situations, it seems, the people I've asked don't have a clue. Is there a code in the VIN that will tell me?

Thanks guys, and sorry for the duplicate posts...I really can't get that search to work for me.

There is not a code in the VIN. A dealer can pull the Maroney from the VIN and see what options it was originally built with. I doubt you can get a dealer to pull this info more than 1 or 2 times.

Your first indication is if there is the rotary switch to the left of the steering column. Just ask the seller to tell you if the switch is there... you don't have to tell them what it is or why you are asking. There is also a white sticker inside the driver side door with an axle code. You are looking for the K294 code. This is the second indicator that the vehicle has the diff lock option. The next confirmation is to crawl under the truck and make sure the electric motors are in place, and the final confirmation is to test them and be sure they work. We have had at least 1 member that purchased a truck with a missing wiring harness. Another reported a truck with the rotary switch but no diff-locks.

Over the past few years there have been a number of guys that have swapped locking diffs for non-lockers and vice versa. Dan's truck is a converted vehicle so his VIN and door plate will not indicate the lockers but it has them.

Back a few years ago we tried to be discrete in asking about the F&R diff lock option in an effort to keep the price down. It seems everyone now is openly asking the PO (and expecting them to know) if the truck has "lockers" which isn't even the proper Toyota terminology so we shouldn't be surprised when these same POs seem clueless.

Thank you! I knew there was something up I should know about. I mean, if the answer is flat out "no, it only has LSDs" I know I'm not going to take a trip to look...unless the vehicle has 150K miles, has all service records,
. and is 6 grand to purchase...then I'll add the lockers myself. along with some gears. Are the axles same size on either?

If the guy says to me when I ask, yeah the code is A294, and it has the rotary dial...then I'll be taking a look, and a drive. Mean time, this knowledge lets me narrow down my search...which seems to be leading me to a LOT of White LCs for sale here in the Los Angeles area.

Another question...how expensive of a job is doing the Birf seals? I'm probably once I get mine, going to have them done at a shop...not something that sounds like I want to tackle.

What is a Maroney?

"First off, the name of the sticker is "MoN-roney Sticker" NOT "Maroney". This is the window sticker that is required by federal law to be afixed on all new vehicles containing the following information:"

OK, I mispronounced the name but it appears that I'm not the first and not the only one that is mistaken on the spelling.

He intro'd reform that mandated uniform pricing and disclosures for consumers via window stickers.

Your front axle rebuild will cost you anywhere betwen $750-$1250 depending on who does it and whether or not you choose premium Toyota parts. FYI...this is generally considered a job for someone with direct experience with these axles....not a Good Year or Sears Auto type project.

Oh yeah...figured I'd be paying Toyota for some decent work...unless I could find a Toyota only garage here in Los Angeles, which is known to happen.
