I just bought a 4runner 8" 4.56 rear e-locker diff and wanting to retrofitted into the rear of my 1988 RJ70 but I hear that I still need to find a long splined axle or could I use my existing RJ70 axles??

I think you will need to do more than just axles...(not sure if you need to)
The shape of the flange surfaces are different and also the stud / bolt pattern... Need to do some welding and cutting to make it fit to a non locker axle housing...

No, you don't need long splined axles with 8" diffs. The housing will need some modifications, however.

This subject has been well-covered over the years in the mini-truck (Hilux) crowd when these retrofits were common.

I also have a spare lj78 elocker housing with out axles and have a pair of none elocker axles from a lj78. I am thinking of just using the original e-locker housing with the none locked axles this way I just have to modify the axle mounts.

John , How come I don't need the long splines axle with 8" and need them for 9.5" just so I learn the deference.

have a look at: n

The way the dog teeth are carried by the differential is different. On the 9.5" diffs, the one part slides along the extended spline of the long spline shaft, on the 8" diffs it's set up to be self-supporting - and requires a much larger cut-out to do that (hence housing mods to fit the 8" e-lockers).

Thank you John I feel much more eager to retro fit it now. Sorry about asking too many questions but I am learning a new thing every day and I have been a land cruiser owner for 8 years now. But how about the front High pinion diff would a rear e-locker low pinion fit in place of the high pinion with just housing mods like the rear and with stock axles?
